Resist Stat and Combat level?

Is resist similar to magical defense? and what's with the combat level rating?

I'm fairly certain that resist is magical defense (and status resist, according to the manual), and combat rating is only there to show you how far you are from the level cap. If you're 3/5, for instance, then your character can gain 2 more levels until you find more marks of heroism.

Was wondering about that. I'd figured out that's what the stars by your level meant, but didn't realise it correlated. On a similar note, anyone know what Adventurer Level indicates?

Adventurer Level determines the minimum possible level of your party members. No one can be more than 5 levels below the current level cap. From the manual...

-----

A character's total level is determined by a combination of their adventurer level and combat level.

When you collect a Mark of Heroism, your adventurer level increases and your combat level decreases; this effectively works as a simple increase in your level cap. If, however, you collect a Mark when your combat level is 0, you will gain a character level as combat level cannot be reduced any further.

In the prologue, Marks only increase combat level as opposed to adventurer level and effectively act as a simple level cap expander.

I'm finding that setup quite interesting because it doesn't only prevent over-levelling (via the caps) but also under-levelling.

Made-up numbers for example: A character that is 5 + 3/5 (level 8, cap 10) getting a mark that raises things by 2 would make it 7 + 1/5 (still level 8, cap now 12). But if they were 5 + 0/5 (level 5, cap 10) then the mark would change them to 7 + 0/5 (now level 7, cap 12).

Basically each mark isn't a cap expansion so much as a level range expansion.

Unless marks are avoidable though that does muck up the potential for low-level runs.

Marks are completely avoidable.
