Help with the HUD

Hi maybe I'm being an idiot but what do the stars above the exp bar mean?

The stars refer to your 'combat level.' Basically, combat level is as follows: if you have 3 stars filled out of the 5, then that would mean you have 2 more levels before you stop gaining experience...as you have reached your level cap. You have to keep collecting 'Marks of Heroism' to increase this, so you can level more.
