You can pick this up on Amazon for only $4.90!

I really liked Alpha Protocol. Everything from the story, to the combat was very well done (although I do think that stealth was a bit too powerful). However there were some minor issues with the game that bring it down a notch and I don't think it's worth the $19.99 they are asking for it.

Amazon is selling a retail copy of Alpha Protocol for only $4.90. This will not register on Steam (that I know of), but $5 bucks for a physical copy of a good game is a pretty darn good price.

I saw that deal too and was about to bite until I noticed the retail boxed version is a Games For Windows Live offering. No matter what, I'm not buying a GFW title. There are too many nightmares about GFW to take a chance. I wonder if the Steam version requires it too?

It's a decent game. Bought it on Steam for like $5 during a sale and worth $5 easily. As for the GFWL on the retail, I don't care for it all that much, but I don't have any issues with it either. I have a good 5-6 GFWL games and they all run just fine for me.

The Steam version does appear from the store page to be GFWL free but if GFWL is no big deal to you, $5 beats $20 imo.

Thx for the info Maddog. Glad they didn't double up the DRM for the Steam version. I noticed a ton of ppl on Steam got AP for $2 several months back. I think I'll wait for another Steam sale. For a game that got absolutely KILLED by reviewers (warranted or not), I doubt the current $20 price tag on Steam will stand forever.

As for GFWL, glad to hear it works for you. I just don't wanna deal with yet another client install. Steam & Origin is enough. Plus I've read so many neg. user experiences regarding GFWL... which by all appearances, is now a dead and unsupported eco-system. Regardless, it's quickly getting to the point where every single developer will be demanding a separate client and/or perpetual inet connection just to play. Ugh!

FYI, another older game I've been looking at lately is BulletStorm. This post is just another example of the types is "issues" some ppl have with GFWL.

LOL! Having to create an outbound firewall rule just to launch your game just cause GFWL's key server is F-ed up and MS tech support is unresponsive?? Madness.

It's a Games for Windows title, not Games for Windows Live.

There's a big difference, that being the requirement to log in to GfWL, which seems to be your "issue."

GfW on its own is just a "certification." It says that the game meets certain requirements.

GfWL includes the client, achievements, and all that stuff.

I second this. I have the "Games For Windows" retail version. There is no "Live" in it.
