How-to create basic layout on a common Z plane?

Pretty much, the moment I adjust my camera angle this problem arises..

How to drop objects on a common z coordinate?

When I was following the tutorial for basic layout....

I noticed he was quicly dropping new objects around and they were lining up perfectly on the Z plane.

Everytime I add a different tile; such as switching from sidewalls to corners. I have to adjust it on the Z plane, before I can even attempt to connect it on the x,y.

What am I missing as far as dragging objects from the object window into the render window and eliminating the need to keep messing with the Z coordinates for each new object I drag over?
