Windows 8 Consumer Preview Compatibility

Basically when I start the game, either through Steam or the independent client, a Java window pops up saying:

We were unable to initialize the game's graphical display. Please take the following steps to ensure compatibility:
Visit the technical support forum for up-to-date information and suggestions.
Make sure your system satisfies the game's minimum requirements.
Update your video drivers.
Ensure that hardware video acceleration is fully enabled.

I've followed the game's Tech Support suggestions (found on their wiki/forum) but nothing has worked so far. I've also tried running the game in comparability mode, nothing either.
(I really have no knowledge of Java)
Is there any workaround?

Thanks!

Usually the "unable to initialize the game's graphical display" is a driver based error. If you have a look at the projectx.log and see a pile of OpenGL errors or see a hs_err file citing a graphics related DLL as a fault point then you've got your answer.

Even if that isn't the case those files will tell you what errors are happening. (They should be located in the "spiral knights" folder in your Steam Installation.)

Yeah, I figured it was considering I'm running an OS in beta.
It's too bad though, Windows 8 is really nice.

I think this thread is more about the OP using Windows 8 than the actual problem.

is it wrong to ask for a solution that lets me play spiral knights without having to wipe my drive?

Not anymore, the developer build was extended till 2013 if you still have it through.(or a friend)

"When the update is installed, both the Developer Preview versions of Windows 8 and Windows 8 Server will have their expiration dates extended until January 15, 2013."
Source:

Seems like the developer build can run alot more things over the consumer build.
