Steam games on another hard drive?

Is it possible to put your Steam games on another hard drive than your Windows files are on? I want to have my Steam and all its games on a larger drive, so i can install all the games i own without running out of space. Can i reinstall steam to a different directory in the larger hard drive, or do i need to do something else?

You can either move the whole Steam directory or use a tool to move only particular games.

If you're comfortable using cmd you can move your steam directory to your new larger drive and symlink it so it still thinks it's on your c drive.

The command is:

mklink /d steam "I:\my new steam folder"

or whatever, issued when you are in the location your steam folder used to be before you moved it.

The link in Anandus post explains exactly what you have to do in order to move the whole Steam installation and the game.

Quote:
The following instructions are a simple way to move your Steam installation along with your games:
  • Exit the Steam client application.
  • Browse to the Steam installation folder for the Steam installation you would like to move (C:\Program Files\Steam by default).
  • Delete all of the files and folders except the SteamApps folder and Steam.exe
  • Cut and paste the whole Steam folder to the new location, for example: D:\Games\Steam\
  • Launch Steam and log into your account.
Steam will briefly update and then you will be logged into your account. For installed games, verify your game cache files and you will be ready to play. All future game content will be downloaded to the new folder (D:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\ in this example)

No problem, and thank you. Those steps work really well, too. I did the same thing a few months back and was surprised how smooth and simple it was, since I had feared I would have to at least backup/restore every single game. But nope, it was a matter of just a few minutes. Pretty good design on Valve's end!
