Hmm.. I can only justify paying $80 for the game if it ends up being as long lived as SC4. Else... jesus ♥♥♥♥ing christ, no.

It will probably be on Steam on release day, like Alice was. EA just wants to capitalize on those who want to preorder, but since there's no discount for preordering there's no point to not just wait till it's released. It's only the Digital Deluxe version which is exclusive to Origin, and personally I don't care about getting real world landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, so I'll buy the regular edition on Steam once it's released.

Well, sounds like EA has gotten a little bit greedy, first Mass Effect 3 for prices around 75 € and now Sim City as well...
well, EA won´t see my money for any of these games then for a really long time (that is, until the prices are way lower) As for Sim City getting sold on Steam ... I doubt it, after all Mass Effect 3 also isn´t available on Steam. Probably Steam with its close connection between Steam client and installed games interferes too much with Origins own DRM mechanisms (which EA seems to be very eager to promote, no surprise, after all it seems like Origin does much more than just check for the validity of games you bought via Origin). No matter what you say, Origin is malware. Malicious software.

I'm in the same boat, it seems. I'd love to see a pre-order option pop up on Steam, but it seems like this is nothing more than a pipedream at the moment. What's even worse is that I really, really like Maxis as a game studio and if I knew for a fact that most of the money made it to the studio I wouldn't bat an eyelash at paying $80.00 for a game that has potentially unlimited play value with mods and everything.
With the DLC, it makes me worried that modding is going to be a little more complicated than anticipated, especially if EA is going to want to milk the SimCity crowd. Maxis keeps saying that modding will be allowed, but I wonder if it will be to the extent that SimCity 4 has been? The only thing that makes me happy about all this is that we will be able to see continued supported updates for a while and hopefully EA will not force them to release a sequel and allow them to evolve the base game over time to match the needs and wants of the community. I might cave in and pre-order on Origin. Luckily I have a few months to sit on this and think hard about what I want to do and maybe see if any light is shed on whether or not it will be available on any other digital distribution platforms. |
