Unhappy HELP! Portal 2 Stopped working!

I try running the game, but it just keeps saying Preparing to launch Portal 2 and then the loading window dissappears and nothing happens. I tried verifying the game cache files, but the same file :fails to validate and will be reaquired" every time. I had to modify a file earlier to get something to work in Hammer editor, but this probably isn't the case since it ran fine before after I changed it and the same thing has happened before, but fixed itself after verifying the cache. Please help!

Problem solved. See newest post.

If anyone else has any information or ideas for fixes on this issue, please post in this thread. The bugs and issues thread gets drowned much too quick and this problem is very urgent for the people with it. Hopefully, we can get Valve's attention on this issue.

I just reinstalled Portal 2 and the same file fails to be validated. It works on my friend's laptop where I also have Steam on my account, but it just doesn't work on my computer anymore. I also checked the firewall, and that's not preventing it either. Someone please help.

I've validated the files SEVERAL times already and reinstalled it twice. I have no idea what the problem is, but that one file just doesn't want to validate.

Just updated 12 times in a row. Same file fails to be aquired after it is found not to be validated.

I've played and finished the game a couple of times since I got it last year. On the same PC, the game now gives me the error 'portal2.exe has stopped working' upon launch.

All I've done is be a good soldier and keep my system up to date.

-->Win7 x64, Radeon 5870 (Catalyst 12.2), Auzen X-Fi Prelude (driver v1.15).

I've validated numerous time and ALWAYS get the '1 file failed to validate', whereupon Steam downloads 18.5mb. Some say that's normal. I've even renamed 'clientregistry.blob' and and the Portal 2 '.ncf' files in the steamapps folder. No change.

So other people are having this problem? It's irritating! I hope thye come out with a patch soon.

It must be Windows. I just redownloaded Steam COMPLETELY twice, and the dang thing still won't launch. I'm not getting an error message though.

Could there be updates with background programs interfereing? New Windows update? This has to be a problem that needs to be fixed soon. The game shouldn't just stop working. When did this start happening for the others of you who had the same problem?

Try this, its help in the past. For Windows User.

Click Start or the Windows logo (or press Windows Key + R), choose run. In this window type "dxdiag" and confirm such video details.

Restart your computer. Make sure you have a active internet connection. Load Steam (if not set to load automatically).

Once Steam loads, goto "Steam" then "Exit"

Browse to the location X:\Program Files (x86)\Steam -- X being your install directory and depending on your setup, either Program Files or with added (x86).

Delete the file "ClientRegistry.blob"

Load Steam again, and wait for the update, and maybe several files for corrupted games.

Once loaded, goto "Steam" then "Go Offline..." Wait till Steam restarts and try load the game again. If it works, exit the game and restart in Online.

I know its allot of work and a read, though I have found it helps. Generally I have found Cloud to be a issue, or modified files.

Okay, I'll try this, but what do you mean by confirm the video details?

EDIT: Nope, didn't work.

Alright, I'm getting closer to the solution (Thanks to Skyrim )

I rolled back my drivers to the previous update, and now the game at least loads to the video before giving the error message "portal.exe has stopped working" and shuting down. Still won't run it though. Maybe rolling back one more update...

Seems more and more like the Catalyst drivers are holding the smoking gun. I'd consider offering AMD some 'feedback' here (as I did): http://www.amd.com/us/CatalystCrewSurvey

Hopefully they're already aware of it and working on a fix as we speak :P

Alright, excuse me if someone has already posted this, but what is the safest way to roll back the Catalyst Drivers? THAT seems to be the problem, but theres no option to roll back to certain driver versions.

I tried rolling back the driver in windows, it still didn't launch but I still suspect it's the catalyst drivers because the timeline fits and that was the only update I've done within that time aside from a few windows updates. I don't have any older versions of the cat drivers, I can't find them on ATI's site and honestly I don't play this enough to make it worth my time at this point.

To roll back your drivers though go to your device manager, then expand the display adapter tree, then go to the driver tab, there should be a button there that says roll back driver. Not sure if that's how the other guy did it or if he did a complete uninstall and reinstall using an older driver package though. That might be the difference.

Rolling back my drivers that way just took away the driver in the first place for some reason. I'm thinking you have to uninstall and reinstall with the old driver package, but to be honest I'm a bit afraid to uninstall the display driver... I'm seeing if that's a "safe" way.
