Talking Why don't people use the manmelter?

Hi everyone; I'm kind of a beginner at pyro, and why don't I see people using it often? It seems pretty good on paper and a nice alternative to the flaregun. I find myself extinguishing burning teammates all the time. So please discuss. Also, do you guys think I should trade for it?

Thanks in advance!

Flare gun is arguable better with the more frequently occurring FlarePunch.

Detonator is certainly better for advanced movement, harassment, and sheer versatility.

ManMelter looks like a pile of .

It's decent. Pretty good with The Backburner in my experience.

Not so much with the Phlog any more. You'll need all the secondary damage you can get with that now.

Because no enemy Pyros = no crits.
The Flare Gun has controlled crits and is dependent on you, while the Manmelter's crits are dependent on the enemy Pryos. Also, most Flamethrowers can extinguish teammates without switching weapons, which means I can go right back to airblasting an Uber or a rocket or something. I know, not much time is wasted, but it's a psychological effect...

No Pyros on the opposite team = No crits for you.

Not that it keeps me from using it. The faster projectile speed allows me to ignite targets from a much farther distance.

FG is more reliable, also, I am finding less and less enemy pyros.

Faster projectile speed is a crutch for people who can't aim with flares.

The Food Chain of Pyro Secondary Weapons
1 Shotgun
2 Flaregun-Reserve Shooter-Detonator
3 Manmelter

The Manmelters hidden downside is that it doesn't deal critical damage to burning targets, the Flaregun does.

First of all, it relies on the enemy team having pyros who are good enough to not die immediately and can ignite your allies, but are bad enough to not kill your allies before you can put them out.
Second, it removes the reliability of crits versus burning targets.
It is decent if you are a team player and are using the phlog or the backburner and can't put out allies normally.
It also has the benefit of critting against enemy pyros.

But of course, you don't have reliable crits.

Manmelter : Flare Gun/Detonator/Shotgun/Reserve Shooter :: SMG : Jarate.

In other words, like SMG, Manmelter is a very good secondary. However, also like SMG, it is often outclassed by the other loadout option(s).

It's primary damage function is solely dependent upon having an enemy pyro on the other team. If its secondary fire action could also remove other debuffs (Jarate, Milk, Stun, etc.) Then it would have a better purpose.

The unwarranted damage nerf to the Phlogistinator, and the fire-rate nerf to the Manmelter makes it even more inefficient.

It's crits are too situational. The standard Flare Gun gets crits on your own time, the Manmelter depends entirely on the enemy's team composition and how close you are to your teammates.

Also the Manmelter's reload is annoying.

I always use it if I'm using the Phlog. I feel dirty if I can't extinguish.

It's worth using if you're running the Phlog, possibly the Backburner. Otherwise it's just sub-par.
