[Spoilers] Question about Zulf-choice

Hullo there, I just completed Bastion, and I have a question about the choice to save Zulf.

So I chose to save him, but once I got back to the Bastion he wasn't there and everyone was just talking as if I hadn't saved him? What gives?

In the end credits, assuming you chose Evacuation, did you have a picture of him cutting up fruit/food?
