"Portal 2 has stopped working"

Well, looks like this game doesn't work anymore. I last played it about...a month ago. Now it won't even launch, just says "portal2.exe has stopped working". It doesn't even get to the Valve splash screen.

All my other Source games work fine. Tried verifying files...said it was fine, still won't work. Tried completely removing and re-downloading, still doesn't work.

I'll list my hardware even though nothing has changed:

CPU: FX-8150
Video: Radeon HD6870
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600
Motherboard chipset: 990FX
OS: Win7 Ultimate 64-bit

Anyone have any ideas? Nothing I've tried will make this game work.

EDIT: Looks like it's my video driver.

Steam will actually update AMD video drivers for you!

Well, it looks like the Catalyst 12.2/12.3 drivers are borked. A lot of people had reported issues with that version and recommended rolling it back, but I never had a problem until now. Going back to 12.1 fixed it.

And yes, Steam will update the AMD drivers for you. That is the problem. The newest version is messed up and doesn't work with a lot of games.

Ok, glad you got it fixed! There is actually some saying that if you keep updating software you will eventually break it.
