Empire AI vs. Medieval AI

I'm thinking of buying Empire: Total War, but have seen some bad comments about the AI. I have Medieval: Total War, and personally think the AI for it is fine. Can anyone tell me how good Empire's AI is compared to Medieval's AI? Thanks.

There are a lot of mods for empire also for the AI. I personally have no problem with it and really enjoy the game for hours.

Since patch 1.6 the AI is propably better than the one in Medieval 2.

Still, they are both unimpressive compared to some mods, like Darthmod.

Empire's AI really isn't as bad as everyone says it is... If you know what you're doing its fine.

Empire's battle AI has some problems but it's no worse than Medieval 2. Both can become confused when assaulting player-controlled walls, forcing the player to sally or run down the clock. Surprisingly, pathfinding has not improved over the years. Empire's fortresses exacerbate this problem, especially the improved fortifications which I no longer build because they are so disfunctional.

The battlemap AI does have one severe failure mode which sometimes occurs when it defends a walled city. When it's walls are breached by artillery, the AI can become confused, especially when managing too many units. Close examination of AI units reveals one or more units constantly twitching. This points to AI indecision compounded by pathfinding overhead. The game suddenly slows down, then continues to slow until it becomes barely playable. Destroy a few AI units or perhaps rush the objective to clear it's head. Medieval 2 did not suffer from this, but it's battles did crash more often. (Eventually Medieval 2 patches cured most battle crashes, except for Timurid night assaults.)

Empire's campaign AI isn't perfect but it's able to provide a challenge. My only complaint is that it raids excessively. This produces trivial battles while weakening the AI by scattering it's troops so they can be defeated peacemeal. Then again, those raids can do serious economic damage so I can't complain too much. The originally released campaign AI consistently failed to launch naval invasions. This has been improved.
