Crash to desktop

I know this is an old game and there are problems with multicore machines etc., but is there any tips you could give me to be able to play this game more steadily? I get crashes every 15 mins or so. I'm pressing CTRL+S to keep frustration to a minimum, but it would be great to find a better alternative.

PC Specs:
i5 2500k
GTX 550Ti
4GB RAM
Corsair Force 3 120Gb SSD
W7 x64

Right click the games shortcut and select properties.
In the target box at the end of the string put in a space, then -CPUCount:1
