So I just beat the game, here are my thoughts.

it was fun, too many swords, not enough maces.

I think it has fair amount of maces. At least first half of the game. Especially the one from first Ogre helps a ton.

There are a lot of hidden items. I didn't even know there was a sling to shoot rocks with until I started a 2nd playthrough.

Man, I totally missed that one, even with 'help'. My Minotaur would have been giggling like a little girl. Play through 2, here I come!

There are loads of maces, they're just hidden. Buddy, you played through it too fast

What level and where? Guessing its really early like level 1 or 2. PM me if you don't want to post it. Yet another ranged weapon that remains hidden. Why can't these things be out in the open like swords, maces, and such? Staves I can see being hard to find, mages have a weapon with spells. Rogues need a missile weapon as they are too squishy to be front line.

Spoiler:
To be honest, I almost missed the sling too on my first playthrough, it almost looks like those plant things on the wall. It is somewhere close to the end of 2 in the corner of a hidden room opening by itself as a trap and contains herders.
However, I found it to be rather useless, because you can immediatly grab a short bow when you enter floor 3 and should already have 6+ arrows by then.

I ended up finding it and ranged capability that doesn't involve magic is actually pretty nice to have. It actually makes a back row rogue useful.

You know you can pimp a backseat rogue out with whatever weapon skill you like once you give him Assasination? I have been put off by the projectile skills in that all they appear to do with upgrading is 'go faster,' while sword/axe/mace/fist do more damage.

I was disappointed by the mage class in general.

Get a rogue with assassination and you can throw out the same damage as a mage and not be limited to 3-4 spells per battle because of mana.

I'm going to go without one on my second playthrough.

I found more melee useful purely due to the ease of attacking and no mana.

Mages are ok for ranged attacks but at the start they are a bit of a pain.
