I figured I'd try playing quake again if they had it on Steam, and they did, but what puts me off a bit is that there might not be any decent servers left to play on.
The few websites I found showed literally 0 people playing Quake 4, couldn't find much about Q3. Guess most people went over to Quake Live, not a big fan of it really and I'd rather play the original Q3 or the slightly nicer looking Q4. So are there still enough people playing either of the two games online to justify the price? On another note; the price for Q3 seems a bit steep for a game released in 1999. |

Quake 4 also has a full REAL single-player campaign like Doom 3. Some don't like it, but I liked it (single-player part).
Quake 3's singleplayer is only fights with bots (with increasing difficulty) on deathmatch arenas. If you're only for multiplayer, don't buy Q4. You can even skip Q3 and play only on free Quake Live servers. Last edited by Krevedko012: 04-18-2012 at 04:42 AM. |

Quake 3 Arena's Master Server went down a while ago, that should tell you how many people still play that game. If you look up servers on gametracker, most are Urban Terror mod.
Quake 4, from my experience, there is only one server active and that is Killat0n's server. I come on around 10-11 PM EST and there's always a dozen+ people in there. Still, it's only one server. The single player experience in Quake 4 is definitely worth the price of admission in my opinion. Overall, I think it was as good or better than Doom 3's experience. I especially like the voice acting and characters. |

Q3s master server is back up and has been for a while. They made a mistake and killed it doing something, I don't think they disclosed what yet.
Q3a is brilliant as an MP game, easily one of the best ever. Q4's MP is a far cry, though its SP campaign is fairly enjoyable. QL is okay, but they've messed with movement physics to make some maneuvers more noob friendly, which I dislike greatly. |

Thanks for all replies so far.
Basically Q4 is only worth it if you're after a SP experience? I was hoping it'd be the Q3 MP only better looking. So Q3 is the way to go for MP, but how many play online in Europe? I'm not too keen on spending 20€ on a game from 1999 only to find mostly empty servers. As for QL; I just don't like it. To me it's like they took Q3 and said "how can we make people take this less seriuosly?" |

Q4 does have some active online players. The experience is similar to Q3 MP, but nowhere near as good (IMO).
No idea how many play in Europe, I'd assume it is higher than the US playercount though. Most everyone has switched to QL :\ |

Q4 is good I actually like it (MP wise) i liked the addition of crouch sliding and the re adition of ramp jumps I mostly played CTF and it was great fun up until the latest patch 1.4 totally ruined the movement.
Never finished the single player of Quake 4 I gt so far then I am bored. |

Even without multi-player, Quake IV's single-player campaign is really good, in my opinion. All of the weapons are upgraded and have a great feel to them, and the levels are smartly designed, with some vehicle segments thrown in, as well. One has you in a cargo truck at the end of a caravan defending it from the Strogg, and another has you defending a high-speed monorail. I actually liked Quake IV's single-player campaign better than Doom 3's in a lot of ways (particularly having a flashlight mounted onto a couple of your weapons so that you're not always fighting in the dark or having to give up firepower to see). If you find it for a good price, it's a great game.

Quake3 wasnt that good. its was blah. Quake4 singleplayer was great, multiplayer is the same thing as quake3 just reskinned. Quake 1 and 2 is highly modified with many mods and active servers.
Two great active quake2 mods are DDay Normandy and Action Quake2 Downloads DDay Normandy www.ddaydev.com http://www.moddb.com/games/dday-normandy (my page) Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LnY65SxKTI Action Quake2 (predates Urban Terror Quake3 mod and Counterstrike) http://aq2pp.com/ Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3F3EHODuXA Last edited by kvaki: 04-22-2012 at 12:20 AM. |

Last weekend I replayed Quake IV Single player.
Quite frankly it's really good. (I played on hardest difficulty) and was an appealing experience. The atmosphere is great, like a second part of Quake II it's a awesome... the sounds, the environments, the enemies, the 5.1 sound effects. My only coplain is that shotgun sounds meh... |

Quake III Arena has plently of servers that has people on.
PS. Quake III Arena has a ton of cool mods, that you can download anytime, mods such as: - World of Padman #1 - Defrag - Hunter (Replaces bots w/ aliens that randomly appear on the map + has boss aliens, and you gotta collect like 8 crystals to win. Crystals appear randomly on the map & you can pick ANY map) - X-men mod or w/e it's called + Quake III Arena has nice graphics for a game that was made in 1999. I think that Quake 3 is a very good game. Last time i was on there were some servers with people in it, Quake 4 i have never played though so I can't help you with that. Yes the price for Quake 3 is quite large. If you don't have quake 1 & 2 you can buy the Quake collection on steam. Otherwise... if you wanna buy Quake 3 your gonna have to pay a lot.
