Do I need to buy other games for Gmod to work?
What if I only buy Gmod? What could I do ingame?

You must have at least one other Source game installed and legally owned on that Steam account in order for Gmod to work *at all*. It is NOT a standalone game. Please refer to the sticky I have up in the top of this forum area, for more help.

If you have only TF2 your good. Thats what I had to start playing. Was hard to play but was still fun.

If you only have one freebie game the inevitable 'why am I seeing so many errors and black/purple checkers everywhere?!' threads will ensue.
Get the games, get their content, play those games too because they're all good anyway. |

I have HL2 EP 1 and 2 on the Orange Box for 360 (got it ages ago). Is there any way to verify that I have it on Steam so I can get the models from HL2 to work in Gmod? I really don't want to have to pay $26 just to get all the models to show up.

Obviously, since Gmod is not on your 360, no. You don't get free games across platforms, except for Portal 2 that I know of.
I'd say pick up Counterstrike Source and that should help you a lot more than other fringe games. |

It just sucks though; a lot of servers look like fun, but with missing textures everywhere I have no real choice in the matter but to shell out cash for games I already own. Does Gmod just use the materials from a game? Any way I could rip the ones from the 360 and copy them to the Gmod folder? |

I seriously doubt that. I'm not sure about how they work with files and types, but I also am pretty sure that it wouldn't accept them as resources anyway if you don't have the game tagged on that account as bought and installed.
Just wait around - the summer sales will begin soon and they ALWAYS have things at ridiculously low prices. |

Sigh...we'll see. If I buy the Orange Box, could I gift the TF2 premium and Portal games to someone else while keeping the HL2 games? Or is it all treated as one game? It's already a few bucks cheaper than buying all the HL2 games individually.

What games tend to be the most essential to gmod?

I say that Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source are needed most. Half-Life 2 for basic content and full NPC use And Counter-Strike: Source for all the kick-a$$ custom weapons out there!
