Do they affect the game balance/difficulty in a negative way?

They make the game easier as you can pick up some armor and relative powerful weapons (assault weapons; and even mediocre assault weapons are way better than pistols and shotguns in most situations) early on in the game. You just need to clear the airport and wait a day to get the items.
