Good Path - How?

I was playing the Good Path till the Border Patrol mission, but I can't get the smiley to gain pieces again, so now I am failing it every time, is there any way to prevent this?

Stick by the border with a machine gun and pick them off. Use grenades and the cover provided, because I believe that is how I beat this mission.

You can also still kill any terrorists who already crossed over if they didn't run far enough. For gaining good to the smiley, I found that knocking people out with the fart gun worked
