retail version activation on steam?

There's a way to activate a retail version of borderlands game of the year edition on steam?

I try to activate the code(that it was in the box) and steam said it is invalid.

I haven't seen the codes myself as I bought it through steam but I know in most cases that Zero(0) can be confused for O and 2 for Z. I'm not sure why it wouldn't work other than that though

the cd-key is only working in the game installer.... and I thought that Borderlands was steam game...

I always register the cdkey with steam and then I throw away the box and dvd as they take away unnecessary space.

Now I need to keep the box and dvd forever, just like the old days.

You'll need to contact Steam support if the retail key does not work. They will either correct the problem or explain why the key does not work. For example, if you bought a used retail copy of BL, the key may have already been registered, thus can not be used again. Steam forums are primarily peer-to-peer support, so be sure to contact Steam support because you will not get any official response from Steam or Gearbox in the forums.
