Can't get a trade started

Tried to get a trade started a little while ago, but the window refused to load.

I've also had a problem today adding people when searching from the Add Friends button on the bottom of my friends list.

Tried trading in TF2. Tried trading out of TF2. We both tried restarting Steam.

I haven't had this problem in the past, it's more of a recent deal.

Any suggestions here?

Try deleting everything except the steam.exe and the steamapps folder and restart steam.

Any suggestions that don't involve downloading a hundred or so gigs of my games?

That one doesn't.
If you don't touch steamapps subfolder, you game data is safe.

ya something is wrong, it shows i have no inventory on another account of mine yet i know i have a copy of L4D2 there

I had to re-categorize all my games, though.

Ah well, at least I was able to get that Strange Shotgun I'd been looking for!

Thanks for the help, do you happen to have chris config? I believe this is the source of the problem

Categories are saved locally so unfortunately they get wiped in this process.

For future since categories are notoriously fussy you should save them off once and awhile. this posting outlines what you need to save to restore your categories.
