New at M&B-what should I start playing first?

Hello, I just bought the M&B collection and I don't know what to play first. The vanilla game or can I hop directly into the Warband or With fire and sword?

Warband is practically an enhanced verson of vanilla, so I don't recommend playing the original version at all. You can straightforward jump to Warband.

But if you would rather play in a more advanced period, with different features (some are lacking, but new ones are there), then you can play Fire and Sword.

It'll depend in which game you're willing to play now, since the stories don't really connect. I personally found the Fire and Sword campaign more difficult than Warband's, due to the existance of ranged weapons. The approach of your enemies must be done differently or you can go down pretty fast.

Have fun!

Allomorph answered the question like I would. However, if you happen to like Lord of The Rings, Mount and Blade original has the best LOTR mod. So keep that in mind

Very nice! I bought Fire and sword on sale and I love it but after a few hours of warband I'm loving that too. I would love a 1866 mod but what do you lose with going back to the original?

Among other things, the ability to marry and the ability to run your own kingdom. In the vanilla game, you can take over a random fortress and make your own rebel faction, but it's just you against everyone. In Warband, you can make your own nation, with it's own name, you can recruit vassals, and all sorts of things that vanilla doesn't allow. Sadly, With Fire and Sword doesn't allow marriage or kingdom formation either.

From what i've heard, Mount and blade warband is a direct upgrade from the original, and that it's much easier then fire and blade. A good musket shot can instantly kill you in mount and blade, while arrows can be painfully but not lethal.

Also, you should play warband to get the feel more of timing blades and engaging in melee combat, which makes up about 69-88% of the combat. You'll find more melee battles and be able to practice using shields, tactics, and just know when to time your sword swings which all carry over to mount and blade.

You could add me and we could Play Mount and blade multi together as well too! =)

I stayed up half the night playing the demo of the original and since I don't care about what's missing (thanks for the info) now I am going to see about buying it. And then finding the 1866 mod.

I can safely say that Warband has the full package out of the 3 game.

Fire and Sword have it's good features too , as in focused on history more rather than fully fiction ( still fiction but you know what I mean ! ) but..and it is kind of a big 'But' , it sacrifices the 'Freedom' you can have in game or cut some options that you used and was actually fun to have. 2 of the biggest flaws were the removal of Marriage (therefore joining through family rather than being a hired-sword...which makes more sense ) and establishing your own kingdom when you take over a state as Independent.

For me, those 2 features alone was a selling point on Warband since I didn't want to cater to other greedy and touchy lords to earn more 'Brownie points' just so I can get votes on a newly conquered remote village . So it gave me an option to say '' Screw those pompous idiots, they drop their guard down, I am taking over ! '' .

As for marriage, one of my favorite ways to earn renown and fame was the tournaments and feasts that rulers did so you would get to impress them in the tournament while making money and it didn't force you to hunt down bandit after bandit just to get 2-3 more affection from them. And it felt more natural , lords being impressed by your ability and you charming the yound ladies in waiting..probably already thinking which lady would help you more in sense of getting a rank and good relations with the lords as you are now 'family' instead of just a hired blade who got land. It was more satisfying, also you had a nice keeper who wait for you in your land with additional options.

I really miss those features in Fire and Sword , to be honest. And I hope a mod can add those into the game. Won't be the same but at leasts it would be a start. I can talk about it all day so I will say this as summary.

Start from Warband , which will make you an instant fan. Random bandit attacks can be annoying at the start but it is another challenge to overcome !

Just to make this clear, M&B: WFaS is based off of the original M&B, not Warband. This means that it never had those two features to remove in the first place.

I basically came here to ask the same question. I've played the original for a couple of hours and it's really fun. But if Warband is the same game only with more features, I think I'll skip right to that one and use the first as a mod game instead.

Warband is generally considered (I'd say 90% of the time) the best version of M&B. If you love muskets and guns, there are several mods in Warband that introduce guns while still allowing you to marry and become King.

Warband in general has the best mods because mod developers have continued to refine mods they originally made for original M&B. My favorite mod is Prophecy of Pendor for its gameplay and balance. Other great mods are Floris Mod Pack and Sword of Damocles.

There are tons of mods that will take you to any period. Brytenwalda transports you to the British Isles circa 1000AD. Others give you a persistent world where you are just a soldier (though a badass soldier) amongst many. The mods alone make Warband the best version in my opinion. Here's a link to various mods below.
