Would a Former WoW Player Enjoy Guild Wars 2?

I stopped playing WoW because of the changes that increased leveling speed an overall casual increase of the game. My favorite time period was vanilla to about the early days of WOTLK. Would someone like me enjoy Guild wars 2? I see a lot of things I don't like such as non exponential leveling and a lack of factions. And also its not, you know, WoW.

After playing WoW, and playing the beta last week, I can say it's very refreshing. The questing system feels less grindy. GW2 seems promising to any MMORPG player.

If you want to rely in gearing and leveling instead improving your actual skill in the game, GW and GW2 might not be for you.

If you like the "kill ten rat" style of quests, GW1 and GW2 might not be for you.

If you don't like to be able to pick any race and class regardless of the any allegiances and sides of a battle you belong to, GW1 and GW2 might not be for you.

But you'll never know unless you try. You might change yor mind after you try.

If you haven't played WoW since WotLK you will find many refreshing innovations in GW2. Mainly, even though the game is completely soloable you don't have to group up with others in order to collaborate on quests and share the rewards. There's no spawn camping or loot ninjaing.

On the other hand, the questing and crafting and gathering and many other elements are highly reminiscent of WoW and Everquest and that style of MMO. GW2 still stands out as being quite unique though.

I would definitely recommend this to a seasoned MMO player.

Well I played WoW from the lauch of TBC until a few months into Cataclysm. I love Guild Wars 2. It's not an easy mode, hold your hand, grind fest like WoW is today.

This!!!

WoW is insanely easy. GW2 really challenged me to learn all the buttons on my bar to beat some tough enemies. GW1 was quite difficult as well and I really appreciate being challenged!

I would say no.
You will always have that wow feeling as it's kinda like a drug,no mmo game will give the satisfaction like wow did.
I even tried rift for a few months, not bad but still i found wow better tbh.

But once you past that wow feeling,gw 2 will be great for you to play.
I'v not played wow in a long time, but even now when i play say gw for a few hours or so i still think bah it's not like wow,but yet i still love gw,but it's very limited in what you can do in it.

Gw 2 will have much better stuff and options to do,but still the raiding will never be like wow is/was.
but that's ok as i'm not paying a monthly fee now.

also we might not have long to wait now.

I totally know what you mean. I've tried just about every major MMO but I keep coming back to WoW because it is so polished and complex and huge. We'll see how long my GW2 honeymoon lasts but I played the original GW for 5 years and have full faith in ArenaNet to make an amazing game.

Since GW2 has no subscription fee there's nothing stopping you from playing another MMO while casually playing GW2.

The combat and quest structure feel quite unique in GW2 though. I think it will have many unique merits that make it worthwhile to play instead of or in addition to WoW.

I agree, but i wont be going back to wow.
Gw 2 will be a great game, but the only downside will be the raiding on it,i don't think that will even come close to how wow was.
but that's ok i can live with that.
good thing will be click a go,rather than spending hours in a outpost trying to group ppl with good gear,or in a guild waiting to get picked out.
Still looking forward to gw 2 even got it pre-ordered.

i just hope the servers can cope, and don't end up like whats happing to diablo 3 atm.

But here is the difference, people expect the guild wars 2 servers to be hammered on launch, did anyone really expect to be having so much issues with a game that is mostly singleplayer and has a queue for when the servers are full, cmon man, a singleplayer game with this bull is just outrageous.

Having said that, last weeks Gw2 Server Stress test was a pretty smooth experience for me, been on the whole 7 hours without a single disconnect and only once a 5 minute laggy experience during the last 2 hours of the event, at which most americans would have been logging in and started playing with the time left.

When I first heard that Diablo 3 was going to require you to be permanently online, my first thought was to compare it to Guild Wars 1. Both have lobby areas (the towns in GW) where you form a group, then you play everything in instances. Which means that I was expecting it to have similar troubles to most MMO launches.

I don't remember people complaining about GW1 forcing the solo players to be online while they played. What's so different about Diablo 3 ?

I can see why Blizzard went that route. It all stems from the real money auction house. Once they decided that they were left with choosing between:
- Characters that would be permanently offline. Which would require a bit more work, make D3 easier to pirate, and have a long term simmering rage from people who didn't think 'permanently offline' through and want to take their offline character online without caring and/or understanding how that will ruin the integrity of the online items.
- Everyone is permanently online. This means a big burst of rage during the launch issues, which will quickly fade away and be forgotten once the issues are sorted.

Diablo 3 was never marketed as an mmo. it has co op, yeah, it has online cash shop blah blah but in essence its still a single player game and to have so many server issues is just crap.

Btw why are you comparing diablo 3 to guild wars, that doesnt make sense, one is a coop mmo type of game and the other is a dungeon crawler with some online stuff.

The server infrastructure is close enough to an MMO for the same issues to crop up. How many of D3s issues are caused by something other than Blizzard not having enough servers to handle everyone ?

They are quite similar. Neither are MMOs, to be an MMO would require parts of the world open to everyone (GW cities don't count, they are more lobbies than open world areas). Instead, they are both co-op RPGs where everything that matters in both games takes place exclusively in instances. The biggest difference in terms of them not being MMOs is that GW lobby areas are cities which you are returned to more frequently.

The only MMO element they have is that they have a global in-game economy. But if you say that is enough to make a game an MMO, then your definition would also call Diablo 2 and Team Fortress 2 MMOs.
