Could not create graphics device. Failed with Error: -2005530518

Hello,

I'm getting an error when I launch Super Meat Boy on my Windows XP system:

---------------------------
Fatal Error
---------------------------
Could not create graphics device.
Failed with Error: -2005530518
Format: 22
Res: 640 x 480
Windowed: 1
--------------Driver Details--------------
Driver: nv4_disp.dll
Description: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX
Device Name: \\.\DISPLAY1
Product: 6
Version: 14
SubVersion: 12
Build: 9610
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

The really odd thing about this is that I *did* get it running before now. I had been playing it for a bit, then needed to go back to Windows so I pressed the Windows key. When I came back to SMB, it gave me the "Team Meat has been sent a mini-dump" error, and then when I tried to start it again it gave me the above error, only that time the error said:

---------------------------
Fatal Error
---------------------------
Could not create graphics device.
Failed with Error: -2005530518
Format: 22
Res: 1680 x 1050
Windowed: 0

Vertex Shader: vs_3_0
Pixel Shader: ps_3_0

--------------Driver Details--------------
Driver: nv4_disp.dll
Description: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX
Device Name: \\.\DISPLAY1
Product: 6
Version: 14
SubVersion: 12
Build: 9610
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Notice how the error there gives a higher resolution and details of the shaders. Not sure why the newer error doesn't.

Error code -2005530518 apparently means "Device does not support the queried technique.", according to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms858172.aspx . I was playing it fine just a few seconds before, though.

I have the latest drivers for my card (296.10), and I have the latest DirectX drivers available for Windows XP (9.0c, plus the Optional Components, which it turns out SMB needs but doesn't install by default). And again, it's not that this computer can't play it - it definitely can, because I was playing it just fine before this all happened.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I've placed one possible solution here
