If I redeem a Steam key for a game I already have, what happens?

What the title says. If I already have a game in my library but I redeem a key for it, does the game get added to my inventory? Thanks!

Hmm...interesting.
Oh, and sorry to see you got scammed.
Happened to me three times (yeah, I can be stupid/stupidly trusting) so I can totally sympathize with you.

Nothing happens, it'll just tell you you own the game already and the key will remain unused.

If its key that contains more than one game and you happen to own all but one of the games in a particular key, it gets used up.

You don't get extra copies.

It says you already own the game, and makes the key void.

Steam shows the Mac version of Civilization IV, Beyond the Sword, and Warlords. Everyone that owns those games, has this problem.

OP, you will not get an extra copy of a game you own in your library through a CD key. They also don't allow you to add them to your inventory since that can be easily abused.

Unfortunately you can't add it to your account. On copy per account. Unlike a gift that can go into your inventory until you decide what to do with it, a CD-key can't.

That's too bad. But how could adding an item to your inventory be easily abused?

Steam wouldn't let you add a key of a game you already own.
