How does multiplayer work?

I don't have the game yet, but I've looked all over the wiki and did a forum search but can't find a definitive answer on how to play multiplayer. I want to get the game to play with my brother but the only thing way to play multiplayer so far is with servers. Is there any way to play the game with my brother that doesn't involve running my own server?

You have to use servers for mutiplayer, like every other online game. Im assuming you and your brother are using the same network, one of you can host a local server to play, its a local server so only people connected to your network can play.

Does it cost anything to host a server? I believe minecraft has some monthly fee or something and that is the thing I am worried about.

You only pay if you want to rent out a server, if you host one from your own computer its free.

you dont have to port forward if it's lan. you can just host a server and use the IPv4 from ipconfig in cmd
