Preference.

If you don't find yourself on cap points much, run equalizer. If you do, run pain train.

Pain train can be great for some sneaky last caps. (Speedshot onto badlands last if the demo doesn't have sticks on it, for example)

Equalizer

Since you should not be getting a lot of healing from your medic, you need all the health you can get and pain train usually is not worth it. However there are times when it will get you that backcap, but scouts will usually be doing that

Have to say on gpit I like the gunboats and pain train any little amount of time helps. Besides that though EQ is king.

Entirely situational. If your team is pushing badlands or granary last, you'll get more mileage out of the pain-train than you would on a spire fight, or a mid-fight battle.

However, just as you need a <reason> to take the paintrain off for demoman (rollouts etc), you need a <reason> to take the equalizer off soldier. Change with a plan in mind.

have to say, you're squishy enough as a roamer without medic heals, with 10% bullet vulnerability scouts will destroy you. equalizer is best still, also because you're probably gonna be on low health quite often, speed boost will definitely help.

Paintrain only for Gravel Pit or trying to backcap last or something. Scouts are typically the best at denying bombing Soldiers and Paintrain is only making their job easier.

Also as roamer you will probably 1v1 scouts on the flank A LOT, no reason to give them that edge.

Used to go on middle with Equalizer and change it in case I die and we've won the fight on the middle point.

its purely situational. Yes on Gpit having the paintrain is pretty good. Say pushing like warmfront last or badlands, paintrain is good, you just have to remember to keep switching ur loadouts.
