How to Make My Laptop Faster?

I played in the Guild Wars 2 beta a week or two ago, and my computer had massive lag the entire time. I'm afraid that when the actual game is release that it will just lag even worse. Are there any options I can use that would increase the speed of my laptop? I'm willing to do options that I have to pay for, but I would prefer things I can do for free.

Adding more memory is really the only easyish thing you can do with a laptop. It would be helpful if you told us your lappy specs too.

Also, what are you thinking of Gw2? Is it just gonna be a monthly fee and that covers everything? I am so disgusted with microtransaction stores in mmo's anymore I am about ready to drop the genre as I am tired of pay to win bull*^+=

Turn the electric up to 11.

-Change to an SSD
-More ram
-Defrag the hard drive after cleaning temp files
-Un-install ANYTHING from Google or Apple and then turn off the services they leave behind.
-Un-install ANYTHING that you don't need. Keep things light.
-Un-install Java and Adobe acrobat.

-Disable the following services: (Click start and type services)
- Adaptive Brightness (Set to manual but I've disabled)
- Andrea ST Filters Service (Microphone)
- Audio service (For the jack monitoring - Will turn off and see what happens)
- Desktop Windows Manager Session manager (Will disable Aero)
- Diagnostic System Host
- Diagnostic Service Host
- Distributed Link tracking Client
- Disk Defragmenter (Your choice)
- Fax
- Function Discovery Resource Publication
- HomeGroup Listener
- HomeGroup Provider
- IKE and AuthIP Ipsec keying modules
- IP Helper
- Microsoft .net framework ... (All of them)
- Portable Device Enumerator Service
- Print Spooler (If you print, don't disable this one)
- Remote Registry
- Shell Hardware Detection
- SSDP Discovery
- Smart Cards
- Superfetch (Should grab back some memory from cached events)
- Themes (Probably better to leave this alone as things look horrible)
- Windows defender (Open WIn Defender first, Options, Don't use this)
- UPnP device host
- Windows Cardspace (Vista)
- Windows Font Cache Service
- Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
- Windows Media Center Receiver Service
- Windows Media Center Scheduler Service
- Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
- Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache 3.0.0.0
- Windows Search
- WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service

Your laptop will function just fine with day to day use but the choice is yours. You can revert back to normal so have a play.

-msconfig: Click start and type MSCONFIG (press Enter on the keyboard)
- Startup tab... remove ticks from various things.

The above can stop items that you may or may not need to be gentle and take it slow. After the above your machine will be faster, use less ram and idle better.

As above: what make and model is your machine?

Don't reset your bios, don't install ANY toolbars and don't update your drivers unless you need to do so. Once we know what laptop you have we'll probably ask you to update your GPU (Graphics driver) to the latest version.

-Intel has an auto-update feature so you can get the latest HD 3000 version
-AMD will have a new driver but you might only be able to get it from the oem
-Same for nVidia

P.s. When you play the game make sure that you've selected the 'High performance' battery/power profile and are plugged into the mains.

It would help to know if it was lag from hardware or bandwidth.

Keep in mind that laptops don't make the best gaming machines. They are prone to overheat and can't have the higher end video cards that some games need.

I use Game Booster on my laptop which helps a lot, and it's free.My VAIO will play any of the latest AAA games, including Crysis 2 and Dead Space 2, even though my system is below the stated requirements. But it's important to have up-to-date drivers, defrag as necessary and don't have a lot of unnecessary programs running in the background, amongst other things.

Great idea, now he can not run Terraria and quite a few other steam games.

Brilliant, now 3079, and minecraft will not work for him. along with hundreds of other applications.

What He needs is a CPU or GPU upgrade.

OP what are your system specs?

Go to start -> run -> type in "msconfig" and hit enter. Then choose "Startup" and uncheck all by clicking "Disable All". Then go to "Services" and check "hide all windows stuff", then uncheck everything by clicking "Disable All". Restart your computer. If you have any troubles in some programs don´t work anymore or you have no internet just make "Enable All" again in msconfig.

The performance in the beta is nowhere near the performance in the release (when they have done the optimization.) For example it utilized only one cpu core and gpu usage was constantly 10-30%, therefore not using all the possible resources on my desktop. It will get a lot better and I wouldn't freak out until you have seen the performance on release.

They're disabled on my computer here and at home with no problems with games. Java isn't and has never been installed and I currently have 128 games. I also always disable .net as applications should still be able to use the resources. The above was suggestions and can be put back where necessary.

P.s. Please DO NOT install Game Booster.

@melody123: Even if you do change your computer you should still consider the tweaks above for extra performance.

What's wrong with Game Booster ? If you don't have a dedicated gaming rig, if you use your computer for a lot of other things, having to switch off any number of services and reboot to clear RAM, and then turn everything back on again, is very time-consuming. Game Booster makes that process one-click simple, and without a reboot. It allows you to customize the program to suit your needs, and offers a lot of tweaks. It doesn't do anything to the game, it's just a temporary PC optimizer which allows you to toggle your computer between two states, normal and gaming. On an older mid-range laptop that's used for everything from gaming to disc burning it's a useful timesaver and I most recently saw a noticeable improvement in performance running Crysis 2, which is extremely resource intensive.
