"There was a problem with your steam installation. Please reinstall steam"

Just got this error, again. This is not the first time I've had it, and is there any solution that doesn't involve pasting all my games out of the steam folder, uninstalling steam, reinstalling steam, pasting the games back in, and then waiting for it to update?

Download installer, try "Repair" option?

That seems to work... the installer doesn't finish, but after trying the client again it seems okay. Giving me an internet connection error instead of a 'reinstall steam' error this time.

(Satellite internet + clouds = no chemistry)

satelite uses proxy , steam and proxy not a good mix.
I think you are very lucky being able to login at all.

Important:
Steam does not support the use of a proxy server. If you require a proxy server for normal internet access, it will need to be disabled or bypassed for Steam to function.

disable the cloud in the steam settings.

Finally connected! Yeah, thanks kav2k. That worked, can't believe I hadn't tried it. I'm not used to using the repair function.

My Steam got that message weeks after i installed steam. Is it an error or something F'd up?

Do you have Avast. The latest update has yet again caused it to obliterate Steam.

The temporary solution (Bear with me on the translations, i'm using the Dutch version:
1: Open Avast
2: Go into File System Shield
3: Open up the tab ''Expert Settings''
4: Open up ''Exceptions''
5: Browse your files and search for: C:\Program Files\Steam\bin* (Add the entire folder)

Note I still prefer users to simply uninstall avast and go with MS Security Essentials instead. But if you paid for this product then that's how you would disable it's stupidity on Steam.

Thanks, I was wondering why my exclusions weren't working, I was adding them in the wrong place.

I used to use MSSE but read some stuff about how avast is better and picks up more stuff so decided to get the trial. If they don't get their act together, I'll most likely switch back.

Considering we already have a VAST thread dating back to February concerning Avast, this problem is unlikely to 'go away'. And beyond steam it tends to pick up a different game every month as a 'virus'.
