How much of the DLC do you NEED, or can you earn it?
As in does the game have a virtual currency that lets you earn and purchase the DLC like say tribes/blacklight retribution?

the boosts are ok, but as far as I played, seems that you can unlock all the ships just by playing, could take you a very long time but you can have them

Like killpion said, you can buy ships with in game credit. the only thing you have to buy is He-3 which will let you buy boosts which is kinda like dubble exp in the call of duty games.

I have to admit seeing all the DLC on day one kind of put me off trying the game. |

Well for a ship that wants 540 (5$ approx.) He-3 can be unlocked by spending 216000 creds. You can earn an average of 2500 cred per match. BTW you don't get creds per kill, if you happen to drop, you won't get any creds (happened to me a few times already).

I don't think anyone will be playing this game for that long. It's shallow, very repetitive. There are only 2 game modes and the maps don't vary at all, just 2 carriers opposite each other with an asteroid belt in the middle. |

Ya He-3 is just a way to get ships and upgrades without waiting. You can get every ship and upgrade just by leveling up and earning in-game credit. Not a dime needs to be spent

My advice would be to play a good few battles without spending anything, just use your starter light ship and go get some dogfights done.
If after a few battles you could see yourself playing the game more then consider buying just a small amount of HE-3, enough to get one of the cheaper ships and have some left for boosts. I bought one of the bombers with a small amount of HE-3 and then used my remaining HE-3 to buy boosts. In total the boosts I got added up to ten games at x20 and then as many games as I can play in 24 hours at x10. During the x20 battles I was earning 35k/40k/50k+ on good rounds which DRASTICALLY speeds up the rate at which you can upgrade your ships and/or buy new ones. You do not need to buy the "DLC packs" or an expensive amount of HE-3, a small amount of HE-3 can net you a new ship instantly and then enough boost to unlock more ships with relative ease. |
