If you start with it out of the box / freshly downloaded = stock

If you obtain it from at least one duel? Then it is definitely not stock. Basically whatever you obtain from the drop server isnt stock.

No, that's the Bronze Dueling Badge. You get a merc just for playing, if I'm not mistaken--perhaps it's when you achieve premium. Either way, it's not stock, it's a unique drop that can be deleted from the inventory. A "stock" item is when you click the tab at the top and go to your stock inventory--THOSE are stock. When you are in the inventory screens for each class, those grey colored weapons--those are stock.

Incidentally, there is an isolated case where steam support granted a "stock" quality bat and another instance where a Service Medal was traded, but the recipient of the trade was given a "stock" quality bat (likely because the bat is item 0 in item schematics, and stock is quality 0). Those are rare and isolated cases that should not have occurred, but are the only known instances of "stock" items that are tradeable and otherwise deletable.

I think there should be a lower class of badge than Mercenary, like just an employee ID or something.

It devalues those actually gotten before the 119th Update when any schmuck who creates a new account can get one. Those of us who got Mercenary back when they came out can't even be told from the new guys now.

The Mercenary has a hiring date you know. And I don't even wear mine, just not to be mistaken to the newer players. Besides, the badge is ugly as heck.

Now this is philosophy!

If everyone has one, then it's a stock item in a sense. However, it isn't treated as stock by the discriminatory game. Fix it now or I will cry every time I see my Mercenary Badge.
