Getting periodic slowdown

The game has very odd slowdown on my system. Every few minutes it falls to less than 10 FPS but recovers after a few seconds of that. Bigger games seem to make it worse. It's not a nice thing to happen in mid combat, especially since it tends to make button presses not register so I can't brake to a complete halt.

AMD 3x2.7GHz, GeForce 250, 4GB RAM, Win 7 64bit.

could be a heat problem. check temp with something like msi afterburner or so.

or try ending all non necessary stuff that runs in the background. disable AV.
