Tips For Thief Gold

I really need some tips on how to play thief gold well. I am on level 2 Cragscleft Prison and I am still in the mines. I understand they can hear my footsteps and stuff so I use moss arrows, but sometimes when I try to knock them out they just take the hit and turn around and pummel me. I was completely quiet in the process of getting to them. How do I be 100% stealthy?

The golden rule of the Thief series is patience. The sound of your footsteps is best controlled by the speed of your movement. Crouching and using the walk key is the quietest way to move albeit the slowest.

Even quieter is to "shuffle" along by pumping the forward key. What you do is you press the forward key and then release it just before Garrett would normally make a footfall sound. This is easiest to do while crouched. Some people might consider this an exploit, but I find this technique is the only way to quietly get through some areas of the game. It makes it much easier to get through rooms that might have a stone floor and a sleeping guard.

Also, note that the instant a guard becomes alerted to your presence they become immune to blackjacking. They still take a tiny amount of damage from it, but they can't be knocked out. If you try to fight an alerted guard with a blackjack they will eventually die from blunt-force trauma instead of being knocked unconscious. However, unarmed civilians (such as mansion servants) can be knocked out no matter what level of alertness they are in.

Good luck!

thank you. i have remapped my controls to this w-forward (NOT WALK) a-slide left d-slide right s-backwards and shift is to go slow. MOST of the time I always am crouched and holding down shift but i do NOT use the walk key since i have re mapped it. Do you suggest I remap it to something so i can use it?

I recommend having the walk key mapped to somewhere on your keyboard. You may not use it all that much, but it can come in handy at times; especially later in the game when absolute silence is essential to survival. I won't spoil it for you, but things get much more difficult later on.

i have made it to level 6 when I had the game on a CD. I know level 7 is a killer though. Thieves Guild....heard it takes forever.

This is mostly true, but you actually have about until about the "Hey! What wa--" *thump* to get them if you're coming up from behind. So there's a little leeway. Just takes practice to perfect.

If you're in the mines of Cragscleft .... you aren't trying to knockout zombies, are you?

I just made it to the level with the thief's guild. There's a lot of crap you have to do, even on normal. You gotta sneak in, do all your stuff, then sneak out again.

Thieves Guild ruined my life. I got so lost in the caverns that it took me like 8 hours the first time I played it. Great, great level tough. Just wish the map was a little better on it.

I found that level fantastic. So much variation, so many ways to go and get lost. The fact that it is so long just makes it even easier to be completely absorbed imo.

Also, if you play on Expert, you may need to utilize the "lean forward" key to get a successful blackjacking on a guard. I find if I'm within arms reach, they know I'm there no matter how quiet I am. The "lean forward" function comes in VERY handy at this point.

Also, at one point in the level Cragscleft Prison, there is a hammerite priest blocking my exit. I put Basso back down on the floor and try to blackjack the priest, which makes me fail the mission for KILLING him. I thought of backtracking to look for the spent noisemaker so I could get him to move, but I'm not sure i could pick up Basso fast enough and get by him while his back is turned. Any suggestions?

There are 2 ways out of the factory. The stairs (I suppose these are blocked) and an elevator. The elevator is to the right when you exit the hammer factory via the upper level (wooden floor).

The priest is located between the transition from the cells to the factory

Outch. Is any of the hammers still alive. Me might take care of him for you. Otherwise I hope you have another savegame and manage to complete the game without releasing all the inmates. Older games are punishing in this way aren't they?
