Angry Thief Gold Directory Limit

Getting a Buf len exceeded 80 at 81 error on Thief Gold.

I know exactly whats causing it and how to fix it, however Steam prevents me from doing so.

The problem is with the directory being over 80 Characters and the game cannot search through and collect the mission success movie so it crashes.

The game crashes after completing the first mission in the game, thus making the content inaccessable.

Normally one would shorten the directory and reinstall and I've attempted this but Steam will not allow me to do so.

Thief will continue to search in the directory that Steam had given it during installation. Changing the steam directory itself does not work as A. Steam flips out and throws flags when I do B. Forces me to enter a " new computer " code and follow with a no connection error making reinstallation impossible.

Then theres the fact Thief will still assume to search the original directory despite being relocated.

Steams directory is too long, needs to be shortened by like 3 characters.

I would like real responses not " WELL IM NOT GETTING THIS SO IT DOESN'T EXSIST. "

If you read above I have done this.

Thief will continue to search the previous directory instead of the new.

Reinstallation just leads to crashes and no connection error.

Are there any other fixes? Possibly a way to shorten the name of the Success movie file and have the game search for the newly named file?

yes yes , I read but you are not very clear about it so no way to tell you did it correct.
moving steam is easy.
and I dont know all the save directories from the top of my mind.

no changing file names will never work.

I think I still do not get it.
moving steam is easy I been moving around the same steam folder from 2003 without hassle.

you can always disable steam guard for a bit if the code is a problem.

edit:it is probably a firewall problem , after the move renew your permissions.

Negative, after I move steam and attempt to start it up I get a " Please do not run steam in windows compatability mode."

Basically I just cut Steam itself out of the valve directory since its a single folder for no reason.

So I go from Programfiles 86> Valve >steam

to Programfiles 86> Steam

* Alright I'm inside of steam finally and entering my code into steam guard again "

whatever.
just move it to c:\steam why make it complicated?

moving steam is childs play you have some other issues that are not helping like admin rights and security software.
try this one.
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...9609-OBMP-2526

disable steam guard if you want.

edit: if you have screenshots and save games to keep also move the steam\userdata folder
the FAQ does not state that sadly.

I am anal too so steam is always on D:\steam for me.
also a lot less admin rights hassle if you go outside program files.

If the game doesn't recognize I'll be forced to just save what I can and completely reinstall Steam with a less hassled directory.

Trying to avoid that but I might have to

I think you cleared it up for me.
you want to move steam without reinstalling :P
funny.

actually on a wel setup PC steam will actually allow that but it just reinstalls it self on the new location when you run the exe.

I advice to always run the instaler after you move tho.

Alright, that did it.

Success mission movie ran and the game continued.

I hope this helps whom ever tries to run Thief Gold on steam.

It's hard to believe it worked perfectly minus 2 characters on a friggin directory. And all the while Steam was just giving me a hell of a time

Thanks for your time, I think this will help with the newcomers trying thief out.
