Steam friends

Just wondering - do people here often attempt to add people they don't know?

I got an invite from someone unknown, whose profile is private. Is there a lot of scamming here? I'm just curious, 'cause it doesn't look like there's an option to send a message and say "Who are you and why are you trying to add me?" Why in the world would I accept somebody I know nothing about?

As to your situation, I probably would just ignore him/her, but think back if you remember them from multiplayer games you've played recently

As to your other questions about Steam friends in general, a lot depends on the person. I, personally, try not to add anyone that I don't actually know in real life. Some people use it like facebook and add everyone the see. Most people are probably somewhere in between, adding their rl friends and people they had a good time with in TF2 or whatever game.

Yes, there also is quite a bit of scamming. DO NOT go to ANY website someone sends you in chat, unless you actually know them in real life, as there could be viruses and keyloggers there, and it could try to phish(sp) your password [i.e.: a fake site pretending to be steam]. People also try to scam in trades, so trade cautiously. Just be smart, and you'll be fine.

Lastly, as to why people do it. Having friends in steam can be great when you want to play a multiplayer game that no one plays much, as, if they play that game, you can easily set up matches despite the fact that people may not play it much. Even in popular multiplayer games, you probably would be able to coordinate strategy better.

Thanks. I'll just ignore, especially since I don't play any multi-player games except Guild Wars, which has its own friends thing. So I'll just chalk it up to "someone adding random friends" or something fishy.

I get a lot of ads from people I don't know. I just accept them. Why not? If they turn out to be a pain, then just block and delete later on. It's a cool way to meet new people to play with. I am always looking for good players to play with.
