Non-steam Doom 3 + Steam Doom 3: RoE?

Does it work?
If I have a non-steam Doom 3, can I get a steam version of its add-on "Resurrection of Evil" working with it?
I guess not, just making sure...

Can you enter your doom3 key into steam and make it a steam version?

That worked for me with unreal tournament 3 which I had been using in retail form for ages.

The key is in a form that steam accepts, but is still invalid. It's many years old, may that have something to do with it?

EDIT: Well actually, the similar example key has one character less...

Doom 3 is not on the list of addable games. You would need to buy it on Steam first, then buy RoE.
