Angry Steam placing all files on Desktop

After one of the recent updates, after the download all of the files were placed onto my desktop. I tried to move all of the files into a folder, but then the update had re downloaded. How do you fix this? Its annoying and almost all of the icons take up alot of space.

When you install a game there comes a pop up about that you are installing the game and shows how much space is required and stuff, then you click next and there it asks if you want to create a desktop shortcut. Just uncheck it

No, on one of the recent updates, after it was done Steam would place files such as the 'old' folder, not games onto the desktop. Like files you can't really open.

It has my userdata files on my desktop, skins, Public, Logs, all of that. It takes up ALOT of space on my desktop, it helps block up half of my desktop background along with some of the other files and shortcuts there.
