Can exceptions be added (by Valve of course) to VAC?

For instance, Cry of Fear. There's no way it could be considered a cheat, but it's bannable if you log onto a VAC server. Can't they just add "Oh, BTW, this file's not hax" to the last line of code? They could do it so only original versions of Cry of Fear files are allowed, to prevent people from editing accepted files.

As far as I can tell, it uses a modified opengl32.dll; that's the only thing in the mod that could trigger a VAC ban. The mod doesn't need the *.dll to function, simply remove/rename the *.dll if you were to enter a VAC server.

It would be nice if Valve created a subfolder for mods so that the mod didn't modify the original game folder, files exe's and dll's, but ran using the modified files, dll's and exe's from the mods own subfolder.

This would stop any accidental bans and allow for more advanced mods that require major modifications of game files.

I thought that all (Gold)Source mods had their own folders within the base game that had all their files. Or does CoF put a dll into the base folder as part of it's install?

I believe it replaces a dll in the base game folder, otherwise the dll wouldn't run when you play the base game without the mod.

Well if it doesn't require it, one has to wonder why it's even included.

Oh well. I guess that specific dll can't be whitelisted, or Valve just don't want to make an exception.

Valve could sign it, but I guess it can be used to cheat in some way.

It was modified for extra effects. In this case, Bloom.

Why are you still saying that playing Cry of Fear would VAC ban you?

We've had a quarter million downloads now, and I haven't heard ANYONE that have been banned by it. 250 000 people can't be wrong. And the fact that we have worked with the mod for 4 years with that .dll in our folder, should've banned us for a long time ago already, yes?

What you are talking about is the bloom modified opengl32.dll. That one bans you. NOT the Cry of Fear .dll.

The VAC rules clearly state that modifying core files and Libraries may result in a ban.

There's no eed for Valve to do anything, the account holder should be responsible about the software they install.

Question, is the opengl32.dll included in the download safe. http://www.moddb.com/mods/cry-of-fea...ear-version-10 this is the download.

Was the opengl32.dll that was modified for bloom and causes bans ever used in the standard download or another cry of fear download on that site or another.

If it hasn't ever been associated with it I will make sure people here know your mod is clean and fine to use. I will change it's status on what is safe to use with VAC.

And yes I have played it , job well done. I deleted the files after playing as I to was paranoid about bans, as if it is a rumour has been spread well.
