There are games that SP2 and SP3 broke badly. No Steam game I know of but Steam isn't the source of all games.

Everyone is pulling away from Windows 8.
By the time gamers and game publishers and devs get tired of it, most of us will be using Google's OSPro or something else by Google on our Desktops and games.
BYW, the guy that created Linux like the Google OSPro.

What the heck is Google OSPro? The first Google search result is unrelated, and the second is this thread!

I feel Windows 7 is the marriage of XP, and Vista, for better and for worse. I personally like it, very customizable, looks nice, and runs good, and since almost everything is switching to it you may as well switch to it.

I know this. The question was in regard to the Steam client. Someone with an up to date XP x64 SP2 told me, he saw this message. I don't, so I'm asking to make sure, Steam will work for me after August.

But why use XP x64 which was a terrible terrible product.
It was way better than Vista RTM back in 2006 and not as old as rusty XP x86 SP2 from 2002 (even SP3 wasn't out). It still fits nicely, because it supports 128 GB RAM, hard disks bigger than 2 TB and is 99 % compatible with XP SP3 (which the successors are not).

Seriously just upgrade to Win7 x64.
Nobody seriously upgrades Windows anymore. You buy a new machine, which has the new OS version on it, and then have to deal with it.

The only people who are still using XP SP1 are pirates using the famous CD Key which is blacklisted by SP2 & 3 but not SP1. If you ask me XP support should be dropped completely by everyone but thats another topic.

Vista is a great OS, sure UAC is annoying but that is its only flaw compared to 7.

7 is perfect.

8 looks pretty annoying right now but if you go back to the developer preview and grab the registry hack to disable Metro you can get a sense of what it will be like when its released. All users of he X86 and X64 builds of 8 will be able to disable Metro and go back to classic mode, theres still no start menu orb but other than that its just Windows 7 with Ribbon.

O.o say wha?

You never have to deal with any OS you dont want to. ever.

While it may not always be an upgrade, people buy new OS's all the time for new PC builds.

Nobody, except most of the people here.

Riiight. Until you want to sort files manually in a folder, like so CLICK, or make 7 remember folder size and position, just like HERE, or browse tif thumbnails that don't fill up your whole ram like in this example CLICKETTY CLICK. Just some of the problems (features?) 7 has. It is far from perfect and I can understand why people stick to XP.

Oh wow.

This issues pale into insignificance when compared to the issues XP had upon its release, plus the issues you will encounter when running an 11 year old OS with limited support for modern software.

Still i know people will always complain about Windows changes and the fact that every tiny little feature of a previous version doesn't make it to the next.

None of the above issues have ever caused me a problem, sure they exist, but talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill.

oh noes, i have to spend 30 seconds of my day moving windows around before i can do any work cause my OCD means i have to have every windows positioned exactly the same every time i use my PC
Lets talk about XP then shall we. Upon its release it crashed more than ME did, had no inbuilf security at all (and i mean literally nothing), explorer often gave false information about sizes and times when copying files (strangely this was fixed in SP1 but then reappeared in Vista?), it ran terribly on most PCs due to horrible memory managment until SP1 and i am sure theres loads more than this. These are real issues which affect users in a manner which is unsafe or detrimental to the uses experiance.

Windows resizing is hardly earth shattering.

You have to deal with an OS, which both supports your hardware and runs your applications.

That is what I'm talking about: Buying a new PC and of course running a recent OS on it. But I see no point in "upgrading" a supported Windows version on older boxes (which run perfectly fine but may break down next month) and throwing money out of the window for unneeded software. Especially if there is software which doesn't run on the new platform.

There are very valid reasons for moving to newer operating systems on older boxes such as improved security and the ability to play blu-rays like xp can't.
