Hey I saw your thread day one but it took me forever to be able to post on these forums. I had the same issue as you and found a solution, although I am on Windows Vista 64 bit and you are windows 7. But hopefully this fix will work on either. First, is your video card up to date? I have the same one as you, 560ti with the latest driver as of June 23, 2012, so I know that it works with that video card and driver. I had this problem with Spellforce 2: Gold Edition and with Spellforce 2: Faith in Destiny. I would try to launch the game, and steam would say preparing to launch for a couple seconds, but then it wouldn't actually launch.
For Spellforce 2: Gold Edition I had to go to the Documents/Spellforce 2 folder, which is where it puts your save file by default. Within that folder you'll find a file called config.xml open that file with notepad or any text editor. Within the application tag (<application...) you'll find screenheight and screenwidth. I have a 1920*1080p monitor. When I first opened this file the screenheight value was set at 1600, which is obviously too tall for my 1080 height screen. I changed the height and width to 1080 and 1920 respectively, saved and closed the file, and wala! Now it launches and I can play it without any problems. If any of those values are too big for your screen it will cause the no launching issue without giving you any error messages.

Now onto Spellforce 2: Faith in Destiny. Same problem, steam would say preparing to launch for a couple of seconds but it wouldn't actually launch and wouldn't give me any error messages. Little bit more to the solution though. MAKE SURE YOU COMPLETE THE STEPS ABOVE FIRST as faith in destiny uses that same folder and same config.xml file. The following won't make any different until you make sure those screenheight and screenwidth values are corrected and saved. Even after I had corrected that file, and Spellforce 2: Gold Edition was finally working, Faith in Destiny still wouldn't launch. It was a user control issue. Even if you launch steam as an administrator, the games you launch through steam don't inherit those administrative privileges. What I had to do was go into my actual install folder that steam puts on your hard drive, the default file path to this folder is
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Spellforce 2 - Faith in Destiny
Within this folder you'll find the actual SpellForce2FaithinDestiny.exe executable file for the game, sometimes called an application file by windows. This is the file that you want to run as an administrator(in Vista, just right click and in the pop up menu choose run as administrator). I did that and wala! Spellforce 2: Faith in Destiny launched and has launched problem free ever since.
Just make sure that you go into that folder and run that actual .exe file as an administrator. Although normally you'd run a program as an administrator by right clicking the desktop shortcut and choosing the option there, the shortcuts that steam puts on your desktop for games are different than normal desktop shorcuts, and are not directly linked to that .exe file.
Again, make sure that those values are corrected and saved in the config.xml file within the Documents/Spellforce 2 folder before running the .exe file as administrator or it still will not launch. I hope this resolves your issue too as this is a great game and I'm super happy I got it working. Good luck. Let me know if that works or not. Hopefully this thread will help a few other people too.

Tqs, trust me i know what u mean 1st the make the app as annoying as possible, cant fathom why dont they just release a patch for it to work in conjuction with windows all versions and with av and for posting and registration on this forum it is an annoying as annoying can get.

tqs i just bought gold edition and ran into the problem and adjusted the width and it worked fine for faith in destiny see my other post in the threads on the first page & yup i came to the same conclusion as u. wonder why steam support could not figure it out, this is one real messed up app when it doesnt work right (in trying to fix the situation)

hope this helps anyone else with the same issue

You cannot play the Spellforce 2 Gold and Destiny concurrently. They share the same folder and don't like each other. Simply rename the folder, play the other game.
