New L4DMAPS mapping contest to be announced on July 1st
http://www.l4dmaps.com/members-contest.php
I'm eager to see what the theme of this one is going to be and here's hoping that it helps to spark interest and bring some great and exciting new content to the community! I feel we could definitely use it as there seems to have been somewhat of a drought of quality releases in 2012 |

I'm not a big fan of these kind of contests. You're bound to a deadline which is often too short notice and I hate having to rush my work because it usually leads to poorer quality.
But eh, good luck to the participants. |

i would like to see a contest for people that are new to hammer |

But yeah, they should extend the deadlines a bit and give a chance to everyone. |

-I mean, why would you want to have a competition for people who are only picking up their instruments for the first time?

I like the idea of a such a contest in principle, but I can understand your points about having concerns over a deadline being too short. How long would you make it?

The China theme contest was a stupid idea imo.. This game doesn't have that kind of art. Really it doesn't have alot of props do much more then generic things. There are a few specific things you can make like a laundromat or a warehouse. But try making something like a police station or Museum and you'll be stretching it a bit. I think even No mercy hospital or the Bus station in The parish was a bit of a stretch for the props they had.
They should focus on contests that the props and art are capable of making. Which really is a whole lot. Valve usually just makes random rooms filled with metal desks... lol 90% of the buildings in the game's maps make no sense what their purpose would be in real life. While then there is are few unique things throw around like a train tracks, pawn shop, burger Shot, and warehouses, sewers etc. |

If you want to see a police station try playing Precinct 84. Pretty good campaign. |

The theme of the contest is interesting: 'Natural Disasters'. Submissions are due Sept 1st. I'm thinking perhaps they should have extended it another month, as it is summer in the Northern hemisphere afterall...

Oddly enough, I was working on something along those lines this morning, but with only one disaster. |
