Exclamation Crashing when loading a map

Hey all,

I've just installed and set up Nuclear Dawn, and one problem I've run into while trying to do the training is that the game crashes back to the desktop every few maps or so when loading them and it gets to an "initializing gameplay" stage bout 4 fifths of the way there (sometimes later). Normally it just zooms through no problems.

I've toggled multicore rendering and some other options but that doesn't seem to affect anything. I've also verified the game cache.

My computer's specs are an AMD A6 3410mx @ around 2.2GHZ quad core, graphics are Radeon Dual (main renderer for games is a 6470M 1GB, basic one is 6520G) with AMD Vision as opposed to AMD Catalyst, 4GB of ram, Win 7 64 bit. Drivers are up to date.

I'll try and see if there's a crash log or error message I can note down too.

EDIT:
OK, no error message whatsoever! Just the standard Windows "XYZ has stopped working, looking for a solution".

Also despite putting in the "log on" code in the console I have no logs whatsoever that I can see at least.

Any map is susceptible to the crash too, there seems to be no discrimination. Normally hits the 3rd map that gets loaded too, although sometimes not, and sometimes the second or fourth.

Anything appearing in console? And if you open your nuclear dawn folder, then there should be a logs folder somewhere in there, might be able to glean something from that. Is your computer fully updated, and has latest DirectX and .NET framework?

Hey mate, thanks for the reply, I can't see any log files anywhere - that leads me to believe that whatever this is, it's not letting ND write them. Yet at the same time, I'm able to save my video settings (which I've been changing a lot trying to get the right performance).

I am in need of some Windows updates, and some of them are .NET security patches and Windows 7 64 bit updates, all of which are from the 12th of June, so I'll update them and get back to you. Additionally, Nuclear Dawn's dedicated server seems to need updating (or more downloading of sorts) so I'll see if that's the problem. Then I'll play a couple of maps and see if anything's gotten better.

Cheers mate!

The ND dedicated server seems to always want to download itself, don't ask me why, and that shouldn't be the problem unless your computer hates you lol

Oh well, that explains that dedicated server bit then :P Unfortunately though after updating my computer*, turning off Comodo firewall, verifying the game several times and looking for that logs folder, there's nothing. Still the same crashes, around the same timing.

Interestingly, every few times I verify, it will go "4 files need failed and need replacement" or something along those lines, and proceed to download a single file about 1.3kb big, and nothing else. Verify it a bit later and it'll either say it's fine or it needs to replace 4 files, and again a single 1.3kb big file is downloaded...

*.NET, C++, the works. Anything Windows tells me to update, I've updated it (well, APART from the Bing bar, I assume Nuclear Dawn doesn't need that though :P). Also, I'm still playing on offline practice/training. Fun game minus the crashes! Herding bots with turrets will never cease to be enjoyable

Also, a related question, what's a good performance tip for a comp of my specs? Is there any quad-core optimisation tricks needed? Performance seems to be worse on the lower graphical settings and better on the higher ones, but still not perfect...

I'll get psychonic to glance at this thread, cause I have no idea how to help, sorry :/

Depends, what fps are you getting? ND really stretches the source engine, and it's really hard to get decent fps. I can run BFBC2, BF3, and Crysis with photo realism mods maxed and never dip under 50fps. In ND I can't even get 50fps anywhere.

Turn vsync off if you haven't already, play at native res seems to help, etc.

By the way, have you tried multiplayer, or are you just unable to get into a game without crashing?

I could theoretically get into a game, but I will test multiplayer later on since I'm about to hop off to bed. I just wanted to avoid MP in case I get into it and then on the third map or so I have to have a very sudden leave of absence
V-Sync is already turned off, but I'll stick it back on Native resolution (wasn't sure whether it did or didn't provide me with better performance). I'll test for FPS but it seems to range from "smooth" to somewhere near 10 or lower FPS. Is the command still cl_showfps 2 for source games?
Thanks regardless snivilous, hopefully this problem will be very short lived

I use net_graph 1 to watch fps.

There is a known crash on listen servers (local servers) after a few map changes. We're hoping to have it fixed in the next update.

Oh awesome, thanks for the info mate! Glad to see you guys are already working on it!

Well then I'll try and stick to MP and getting my performance ideal in the meantime.

I was playing MP (not hosting) when I crashed. Same general symptoms - after a few map loads, game goes kaboom.

The first map or two was tutorials and offline practice, though, so maybe that's what caused it.

Still, good to see you know it's there.

An update:

jumping straight into multiplayer causes no crashes. It would seem the very fact that a local server was launched is the trigger for this.
