Can anyone explain me whats a duped unusual? And why people gift unusuals? And do they increase or decrease in price?
Thanks. Rep to the best 2 answers |

There was a glitch that allowed a person to double their unusual a while back. Generally they're worth less if they can be found to be duped.
And I don't know why someone would gift an unusual, but gifted unusuals are typically seen as lesser in price. |

You would gift them so that your name would be on it. It's used more as a personal thing than for value, or if someone is tf2 famous you could have them "sign" something for you.

I had a beams tossle cap once, and some guy added me and offered me his gifted beams tossle cap + a bud. As soon as we traded he said something like "HAHAH PWNED NOOB" and signed off.
Back then I thought it was a good deal for me, since I planned on keeping the hat anyway. But when I came round to sell it off, every potential buyer got scared off as soon as they found out it was gifted. So yeah, gifting does impact a lot on price. |

You could gift a hat to a friend. Then the friend stops playing or wants to trade it away for whatever reason and the result is another gifted unusual hat on the market.

This is one of the very few things that I like about the TF2 Economy, senseless devaluation of an otherwise awesome items.
I could understand an item with a gift tag being devalued if the guy who originally gifted it has a really stupid or immature name, but it seems like the mere fact that an item has a gift tag on it automatically devalues it regardless of the quality of the user's name. The one thing that I can't make any sense of, is the devaluation of uncraftable items that are purchased on the Mann Co Store. Sure, it makes sense for ugly, bottom tier hats that nobody wants, but I will never understand for the life of me why hats that no one in their right mind would ever craft like the Team Captain are worth less in uncraftable form. Not that I'm complaining though, because thanks to this nonsensical practice, I can now buy my favorite hats for roughly half their usual price. |

The whole 'extra text on an item = less value" thing is a load of carp anyways. If you're going to say that an uncraftable weapon is worthless, don't then also say that an uncraftable Vita Saw is worth 8 keys.
Hypocrites. |

Often what you can see is people wanting to buy a "dirty", gifted unusual and they write: "It is gifted, thats why i can only give you 50% of what you are actually asking for it." And an hour later they will put the gifted hat up for sale and write something like: "Don't even think about lowballing because it is gifted, i love this hat and blablabla" |

my favorite is that "uncraftable" taunt miscs are worth FAR less than "craftable" ones..... THAT MAKES NO SENSE

But I agree, the arbitrary propagation of perceived worth or worthlessness of an item based not on demand, but of the opinions of a few people who control online spreadsheets is a bit out of hand. |

The reason gifted and uncraftable status affects valuation is similar to other collectible items and how they are valued. A "gifted by" tag is similar to a bent corner or a little kid writing their name on a baseball card. It is no longer in a pure or mint type of condition and thus the value is affected accordingly.
Uncraftable status tends to cause a bit more debate, but again for people who collect items (virtual or physical items) they tend to pay the most for items in the highest quality possible (ie clean). Another aspect of collecting is the thrill of the pursuit (ie pickers/treasure hunters etc). A non-craft item typically means that it has been purchased from the store and means it was obtained through less of a challenge. These items also have the connotation of being "cheap" or "knockoff" because anybody can obtain them from the same place. Agree or disagree, these are generally the reasons gifted and nom-craft items tend to be valued less than their "clean" counterparts. |

How low can the price of an unusual go with these circumstances?
