Why can't we sell/trade bought games?

I've got a stack of game on my list that i never plan on playing again. Why exactly can't i trade or sell them? I realize you can gift games, but i'm talking about ones you've played.

Since with most Steam games there is no CD Key that you must input, i don't understand why they can't be traded or sold to other people. Can someone fill me in on why it's not a function? And would it be possible to make it a function?

Because when you purchase a Steam game you purchase a license that is tied permanently to your account.

because the people who wouldve bought the game from steam, will now buy it from the community for half its price, which means that steam wont get as much profit. atleast thats my take on it.

EDIT: ninja'd

You cannot sell that which you do not own, and we don't own any of the games we have on Steam.

Suppose you spent a year creating a game that could be sold on Steam.
Someone bought the game for $4.99
That person played it and then sold it to someone else, who played it and then sold it to yet another person until finally now 1000 people had played the game.

How much profit did the developer make on the sale of the game that sold 1000 virtual copies? A total of $4.99

Doesn't that sound a bit unfair.

Game publishers and developers HATE used sales. It steals a new sale from them and they get nothing for used sales.

Also, if used game selling and trading were allowed, we would not have the extreme discounts like we are seeing right now.

i would just like a game giveaway, i have a lot of games that i don't play, but my friends would like. But I don't think this will ever happen because people could sell their games this way

Games are perishables. No amount of forcing from the German annexation machine will change anything, for as long as that key fact is still true.

Even if laws mean it is legal to resell them, no one is going to buy second-hand product keys that they can't use, and no legitimate business is going to facilitate the trading of them.

These days, even stores that deal solely in second-hand games outright refuse to take PC titles. That should say it all.

They should allow used games to be traded, or given away, under certain rules.

Example:
The game shouldn't be played on the specific account more than 5 hours. Or something like that.

The law states that Valve cannot object if someone wishes to resell their games.

The law doesn't state that Valve has to facilitate a method of doing so. All this ruling changes is the fact that Valve can't do anything about people selling Steam accounts as a method of transferring games.

Part of the court ruling was to make dd games resealable so it's usable for the buyer & at the same time revoke usage for the seller. So everyone is going to buy second hand if it's cheaper since it's guaranteed to work.

About time as well.

I agree to this. Yes it should be our right to sell or do whatever with it but if that started happening we won't be seeing massive discounts on games like on steam. It is a major reason to all publishers to come on steam.
