Wow. I am baaad at this game.

Got the base game as part of the steam sale.. wicked deal, and I love the idea of Total War games, but I am just very very bad. I lost the siege tutorial battle (and then it just pretended that I won tov cover my shame haha) and can't seem to do anything well with boats.

I wonder if there are any good ways to learn some basic techniques of not sucking.. and get answers abt various thing (for instance.. if I see an enemy agent in my territory can I do aannnything abt it? i can't seem to attack them with units.) The included encyclopedia is confusingly organized and lack of searching in it is baaaad.

There's a thread on this page, about 10 down from this one at the moment that has a good place to start your journey, it's a free guide by Frogbeastegg.

For sake of completeness I'll include the link again here:

http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showth...-War-Shogun-II

And of course you can return here as often as you like and I and others will be happy to answer questions.

Take boats: here's the tip on boats, get a trading port going early, I mean really early, and get down to the east end of the island where the European trade nodes are and cover as many of them initially with at least one trade ship, then keep spamming trade ships on those nodes till you max them out at 10.

And on your question about agents: you can kill them, you just need other agents to do it with, not the military. You can reference the guide above on what the respective agents are good at and what development you need to make to recruit them. Use them, they are a very powerful tool in your arsenal that will help you in quest to become Shogun.

Just don't talk about geishas. Seems every time someone talks of geishas in TW forums someone comes in saying "geishas didn't seduce/kill" irrelevant to the topic.

But on the topic, I myself suggest you play the game on easy and try to get used to everything.

I agree with Minahina. The game is way to big to be learned by a text-based tutorial... They can get you started so I wouldn't simply dismiss them. Just play the game a couple of times and learn from your mistakes. I've been playing since Medieval 1 so I'm pretty used to the game but I can't remember how many times I started Medieval and Rome over again because I found out a couple of long-term mistakes I had made.

Just get into the game a bit and you'll be cutting your way to the Shogunate in no time!

Well, yeah, I mean of course you don't really learn any game by reading text. You reference it when questions come up, least that's what I do.

Well an important first thing to remember for the battles if you don't know already is when you move your units you should be putting them in formation (I think you hold down the right button and drag to the formation you are happy with once you have selected them) and another important thing is not to run around everywhere unnecessarily since it tires out your units and makes them less effective and more likely to rout.

I kid you not. Read the Art of War, and you'll be badass.

I did. I became.

On my 3rd try at the campaign I have a strong footing and will complete taking Kyoto. The other 2 I wound up quitting at like turn 100. Game is fun, challenging.
