What does (2) mean on Steam?

I'm in a group's chat and for a while, we've been wondering why somebody in the chat has a (2) in their name that's white instead of gray, blue, or green unlike their name. What does this mean?

I think that just means that multiple people in the group have the same username.

There isn't another person in the group with his name, and it appears in chats separate from that group.

It's this. Although, they don't HAVE to be in the same group.
For example, if you have someone called "Luke" on your friends list and someone in a group you're in is also called "Luke", one will show as Luke (1) and the other Luke (2).

I believe this also happens if there are people with the same name in DIFFERENT groups that you have joined.

It does not need to be on your friend's list. If anyone has the same name as another, the last one gets (1), (2), ..., (103.871)

Not anyone, but if multiple people in the union of your friends list and all groups you are a member of (i.e. almost anyone you can chat to on Steam) have the same name, one gets a MyName(1), one gets MyName(2) and so on.

It means they have been determined to be class 2 citizens of steam. Steam and its community frowns on these second class citizens.

I constantly have to add a period after my name to stop this as I find it as an annoyance, personally I think that on your screen you should see your self as your normal name but everyone else could see you as (1).
