Will using a VPN get me banned?

My dad's set up an american IP address using a vpn, while we're in canada. Will this possibly get me in any trouble while playing online? I don't see why it would, I'm just easily paranoid. I'm not planning to buy any games while it's active, I realize that would be tax fraud.

You'll be fine, you aren't cheating or committing fraud. You may get very high ping depending on the routing.

Since you posted this in the VAC (Valve Anti Cheat) section, I going to start off by saying no, you will not be VAC banned.

You are asking if your account will be in trouble if you use VPN with steam. Don't do it. I'll let someone else explain what happens if you abuse VPN with Steam (like buying region locked keys).

Make sure everything you purchase via steam is actually available in your region. If it isn't I would highly suggest that you do not purchase it until it becomes available in your region. I'm not sure how strict VALVe is on these issues, but I wouldn't risk it.

Region restrictions arent the problem, more the price in some steamshops.

VPN is used for many legit reasons so I doubt it.

VPNs itself won't get you banned. But it may severely impact your experience while playing multiplayer.

I'd be careful.

You agree that you will not use IP proxying or other methods to disguise the place of your residence, whether to circumvent geographical restrictions on game content, to purchase at pricing not applicable to your geography, or for any other purpose. If you do this, we may terminate your access to your Account.
The new Eula.

Might just be for buying stuff but I honestly wouldn't do it.

If they are hardcore with it you won't get VAC banned but account banned.

Ignore all those trolls and morons who enjoy giving incorrect/misleading advice.

Using VPN to hide or disguise your place of residence is against the Steam Subscriber Agreement. Merely running Steam and connecting via this setup of your dad's is a breach of that contract.

This is the VAC forums, though, regarding the anti-cheat system, so your question may be best placed elsewhere on the boards, or even put to Steam Support for definitive clarification.
