Talking Patching Fallout 1 and 2

What a frustrating experience! Feel free to scan all files for viruses before extracting. Make sure you turn off updates so it doesn't overwrite your work! Digging through all the messages to figure out how to do this was a pain:

Fallout 1:

Grab these two files and place them in your download directory -

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dlo...d&file_id=1370

http://teamx.ru/site_arc/patches/fallup-1.2.1-EN-RC.rar

You need a program which opens rar files. Open fallup-1.2.1-EN-RC.rar and extract it (overwrite when prompted) to your steam directory where your game resides, i.e.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout

Then, unzip the Fallout1_High_Resolution_Patch_3.06.zip into your download directory and go inside the folder it creates. Run Fallout1_High_Resolution_Patch_3.06.exe and it will ask what directory you want to extract it in (overwrite when prompted), i.e.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout

Finally, go into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout and run the file called f1_res_patcher.exe. Once this is done, you should have a place in game after the introduction screens to change your options. (It doesn't automatically fix it the first time you run - you have to choose the correct setting in the menu). It's patched!

Fallout 2:

This one was a bit trickier, but not impossible.

Download these two files and place them in your download directory:

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dlo...e&file_id=1371

http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dlo...ile&file_id=82
(Follow the download prompts)

Unzip the Fallout2_High_Resolution_Patch_3.06.zip into your download directory and go inside the folder it creates. Run Fallout2_High_Resolution_Patch_3.06.exe and it will ask what directory you want to extract it in (overwrite when prompted), i.e.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout 2
**make sure you put the space in between fallout and 2, otherwise it will create a new directory**

Open f2patch.exe and extract it INSIDE YOUR DOWNLOAD DIRECTORY. The only file you need is the fallout2.exe out of the set. If it puts the patch000.dat file in there, it thinks it has the wrong version and will not work on Steam. Open your directory where the game resides, i.e.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout 2

Rename your original fallout2.exe file to something like fallout2-2.exe. Drag fallout2.exe that is in your download directory to the steam directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout 2

Finally, go into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\fallout 2 and run the file called f2_res_patcher.exe. Once this is done, say a small prayer, you should have a place in game after the introduction screens to change your display options. (It doesn't automatically fix it the first time you run - you have to choose the correct setting in the menu). It's patched!

P.S. I think Tactics works fine because you can change the resolution inside.

It's worth mentioning also that the FO2 Restoration Patch includes the Unofficial and High Res patches, and also you may want to install sfall as well. It's an engine mod that apparently makes it more friendly with modern computers.

The colors look fine now but I am getting a lot of screen flickering. Any ideas?

Windows 7 64 bit OS

Edit:
Nevermind, it's working great now.
P.S. Thanks for finding this, man!

Question Laptop?

First off, thanks to Fideous for putting these links and instructions in one place for us. I downloaded the fixes for Fallout 1, applied them to my desktop installation and that seemed to work fine. But I'd rather play this on my laptop, and the fixes don't seem to work at all. I'm running a Dell Vostro, i5, W7 x64, with one of those "switchable graphics" setups where you can choose whether a program uses the Intel 3000 adapter or the AMD 1 GB RADEON adapter. So the game runs normally without the patch, just with the color issue, and when I apply the patch it works the same with the default 8-bit video. But as soon as I switch to 16 or 32-bit, the video goes haywire - I start to see the original splash screen, but then the rocket ship freezes. The mouse doesn't move, but mouse clicks work, as does the Esc key and audio, so I can click through to the main menu then Esc out of the game, I just can't see any of it because the screen is frozen. I can Alt-Tab in and out of the game while it's running, and can move the mouse for maybe a second while the game window is coming into focus, but after that second the mouse freezes again. I've tried setting the game to either one of the graphics adapters, I've tried Windows compatibility settings, but the only thing that works is unpatching the game and running it 8-bit. Anyone have any ideas?

Hmm. Here is what I would test. There are two different places to set your graphics - f2_res.ini and ddraw.ini My theory would be that your laptop is utilizing one set when the splash screen opens and the other one when the game play starts. I would back up both files first and then make sure the graphics settings match each other in the ini files by manually entering the values. Start with something that your laptop can easily handle like 800X600 with 16 or 32 bit and work your way up.

High res patch seems to work fine, but it doesn't fix the rainbow glitch. Any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I didn't have much luck. The ddraw file was kind of tough to decipher, but the only section that looked relevant was the one labeled [Graphics]. I found a line early on after talking about 8-bit and dx9, showing Mode=0, so I tried changing that, but no matter what I put in (I tried 1 through 5) I got an error on launch that says "Failure initializing input devices", so I set it back to 0 and left that file alone. The other file was easier to figure out, and I changed a lot of settings there, but nothing had any effect, and changing the color from 8 to either 16 or 32 had the same effect as switching the option in-game. Any other ideas? I'm running the game well enough in 8-bit mode, but the colors do get a bit weird so I'd love to find a solution to this.

I have the exact problem as the poster above. Except when I hit ctrl (my computer is set so when I hit ctrl a ripple shows around my cursor) it makes the game show what it should be showing, but only for a second. This only happens when I change the colors to anything over 8bit. When I try to put the colors back to 8bit, it works fine but still has the rainbow glitching. This is for Fallout 1 by the way.

Okay, so I downloaded the files for both and installed them, but for Fallout 1, it actually made it so I couldn't do anything. I couldn't even reach the menu. It would freeze on the "Brian Fargo Presents" screen and I couldn't do anything except exit the game.
For Fallout 2, I installed the files, but I can't find the .exe file for the game. I ran the program anyways and I got the audio, but no picture.
I should also mention that I can't find the original .exe file for Fallout 1, either. If you could possibly explain where it might be, I would appreciate it.

Okay, I just realized that I was thinking of the wrong files... the .exe files are the actual application that runs the game, right? I was thinking of the .ini files. Either way, if someone could tell me where the .ini files are for the games, I would appreciate it. I would also appreciate some extra help with my Fallout 1 problem.
If someone needs extra info to help me, I will be happy to oblige.
