How to prevent mouse from waking computer from standby?

It's the most annoying thing when the mouse detects movement all on its own and wakes up the computer. It's bad enough that it also does it when I'm watching videos and brings up the control bar.

The mouse is a Logitech M510, and the OS is Windows 7. I don't think I've ever had it happen with another mouse. I wish I could permanently prevent all mice from sending signals when the computer is in standby. I only use the keyboard to wake the computer.

That's assuming sleep mode is what you meant by 'standby'.

Nah, I've already tried that solution... didn't work.

I guess Windows 7 calls it sleep mode now, used to be called standby.

Unplug the mouse when you put it into sleep/standby/hibernate/not on mode.

This actually sounds a bit strange...it sounds like you are saying that the mouse is getting input on its own (without you moving it) that is disrupting your videos and waking up your computer from sleep? If you are not moving the mouse, you should not be getting movement.

The other poster also gave the correct instructions for disabling the mouse from waking the computer. That should stop the problem entirely. If you are still having the computer wake up randomly, something is wrong. Are you sure it's the mouse doing the waking?

not that I have any issues but I just tried that and it most certainly keeps my MX518 from bringing the pc out of standby.

sorry but that would be silly to do every time he uses those.

I think it has something to do with the optical/laser part. I don't remember optical mice ever having this problem, but every laser mouse I've had will often detect movement on its own. Most of the time, it's due to a very slight bump to the desk, but I swear, even when I'm not near the desk and there's no vibration throughout the house, it still does it.

Actually those instructions do work... sort of. With my particular mouse, you need to do that with the mouse AND the nonexisting keyboard. But that doesn't solve the problem permanently. Those checkboxes will become checked again on their own. I'm not sure what exactly causes the boxes to be rechecked, but it's related to either shutting down the computer, unplugging the mouse, or plugging the mouse into a different USB slot. Changing the USB slot seems to recheck the boxes without fail... it almost seems as if everything related to the mouse is removed and the driver is reinstalled every time I plug it in.

May have to. Not sure if that will stop it from detecting movement, though.

well if that works then why would you be unplugging the mouse or plugging it into a different USB port anyway?

I use a laptop, which means I unplug things often to move around.

well I would get a wireless mouse with the stubby receiver that you can leave plugged in all the time.

Well, I don't want to have to never unplug my mouse or buy a new one to solve this problem.

Sometimes I need to plug something else in, and the mouse receiver is either blocking it or in the position I want to plug the other thing into, or sometimes I want to use the mouse on another computer.

I'm still confused...
oh, i see now...
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...-and-hibernate

Anyways, check with the motherboard bios for "wake on mouse" and if you have an nvidia chipset you should get its drivers updated. I presume you're upgrading from xp->7?

If you can't seem to find what chipset you have, you can use cpuz.

Disable wake with mouse in BIOS. Or shut down computer.

Hmm... I've never heard of this hybrid sleep mode... might only be something in Vista. I don't ever use hibernation, just sleep mode.

I've checked every setting in the BIOS and nothing appeared to be remotely related to this.

I have all the latest drivers installed from ASUS, the manufacturer of my laptop, but I never got the drivers directly from the makers, perhaps with the exception of ATI. Do you recommend doing that instead?

This PC has always had Windows 7 installed.
