Which older games run poorly on Steam?

I've heard the Commandos series has some real problems while running on Steam and works better on GOG. Is this true, and if so, what are some other series/games that tend to run better outside of the Steam client?

hmm, some games require fixes to play on windows 7s that are easier to implement if its not on steam, such as red faction 2 and mdidnight club 2

There's a community patch and a codec pack that you can download that will make the Commandos series work easy enough. The GOG edition just already has it done for you (which admittedly is a plus).

Max Payne 2 needs an audio fix if you're running Vista or 7. FEAR 2 needs some fixing as well.

All of them, though, are issues with the games themselves running on newer machines, it doesn't really have anything to do with Steam.

Alien Shooter 2: Reloaded runs kind of bad on Windows 7, and I'm not the only one to notice it. It was still playable, however. And, I'm not sure if it's just me, but Unreal 2 keeps crashing randomly.

Pretty much this. The thing with GOG is that they worry more about making the old games playable, while Steam only worries about selling them.

I always recommend GOG for older games, since they are more likely to work correctly plus they each come with a bunch of freebies.

Freebies? Meh, I don't really see much upside on random digital goods like avatars and game guides. That's like saying google and google image provides us with 'freebies' haha!

Not taking away from Gog.com though, they provide great service and who can side against a company that creates DRM free files for us all.

I had no problem running FEAR 2 (the game did outright suck, though). Max Payne 1 took a lot of work to get running, and I gave up on Max Payne 2.

FEAR 2 is only a few years old.

True, but it was a common problem.

The problem is not really Steam though .. It's Valve not patching games and going the extra distance like GoG does.

Those games you not run no matter where you got them. GoG is just nice enough to work out the kinks before selling it.

Red Faction 2 worked fine for me. The first Red Faction game though is the only game I have not been able to play at all. Even after applying the recommended fixes.

Max Payne 2 works fine. I had more trouble with Max Payne 3 to be honest.
