Question The future of Windows 8 and STEAM

Hi STEAM community and Valve,

now that we know that Gabe Newell is not very fond of Windows 8, I am wondering what the future of Windows 8 and STEAM will look like. As in, will we get any support from Valve to integrate STEAM and our STEAM games nicely into the Windows 8 Design (formerly Metro Design) and would you guys and gals as users like that to happen or not?

What type of integration would be necessary for you? A STEAM App in the Windows App Store with full functionality (friendslist, community features, separate game links as their own tiles as opposed to y standard non Windows 8 Design old school icons tiles that were getting now) to integrate STEAm into the Windows 8 Design? Ideas and requests please!

I would love this thread to stay on this subject alone and not to discuss the awesomeness or iness of Windows 8 in general and neither Gabe Newells comment on it.

Generally does Gabe Newells critic seem to be more about the Windows 8 App Store and its implications for sales and margins, as well as its impact on the PC industry rather than about its technology or the new Windows 8 user interface and design (formerly Metro). Maybe that leaves a chance that Valve will pick up some work in this direction? For me as a user I’m definitely more interested in how nice STEAM will work with Windows 8 new look and feel. Even though I’m also not happy with the Windows 8 Designs usability at all so far I would still like to see my STEAM stuff integrate.

If you want to try Windows 8 yourself start up a virtual PC (Oracles VirtualBox supports Win8 => https://www.virtualbox.org/) and download the Release Preview from Microsoft (=>http://windows.microsoft.com/de-de/w...elease-preview).

P.S.: Here's a quick link to Gabe Newells comments, sorry for just linking a google search, but everything I read was in german, so no usefull links for you here...^^ Link: https://www.google.com/search?q=gabe...well+windows+8

Yeah, that is why I would like to concentrate on the question how would people like STEAM to work with Windows 8 (Design) [ex Metro]. Windows 8 in generall has been discussed, compatibility with games has been discussed but not the possible integration of STEAM into Metro (much).

It would launch like any other application, no?

Either way most of us couldn't care less, personally I'm staying on Windows 7 and slowly move onto Linux until more of the games I play are available.

Steam sells desktop applications for desktop PC-s, not tablets. PC users usually use the desktop, not the metro UI. The current version of Steam works well on the Windows 8 desktop. There is no need for a metro version, it would be the same unnecessary work as making a 64-bit client. The current one works fine.

For the most part steam+metro has been discussed and its impossible with current restrictions. If its a app on metro it can't launch other applications, it would be similar to the android version and then having to go to desktop mode to actually use the program.

There won't be any Windows 8. That damn thing looks like it's been developed for tabloids, and then ported to PC. They are focusing more on accessibility, user friendly interface and touchscreen. Why on earth would ANYONE with their right mind upgrade to Windows 8 is beyond me.

Windows 7 is the new XP, don't worry about W8 - it'll be bad.

Ignore Win8. It will be a horrible flop - no reason at all to prefer it to Win7.

An important lesson to Windows. Let's hope what comes after it is something reasonable. Win8 isn't.

If Stardock follows through with expanding Start8 then Windows 8 is alright with me.

All I care about is booting to the desktop and getting the start button back which is what Start8 does.

why get windows 8? is just going to take a vista step intill windows 9 prefects it for everyone. Passing windows 8, since windows 7 does everything perfectly for me, why ruin it?

Lightbulb

  • Future of Windows 8 - EPIC FAIL
  • Future of Steam - Bright as Quasar
Don't worry about Steam on Windows 9, it will run. But the games will run horrible.
  • Future of Linux - getting a new Girl-friend for the very 1st time. Her name is STEAMy.

I installed Win8 Preview on my old laptop, It runs really quick and smooth and I'm really liking it. I considering buying it just for my laptop as I'm not gonna put it on my main PC risking losing my steam games
